It makes no sense at all. One of the 5 hardest punchers in the sport, someone who's made a living of knocking damn near every opponent senseless, someone who knocked his last opponent out with a half ass jab, "chooses" to not throw anything of real substance, against a MW?

Then someone who has "never" shown power even at MW, melts a man that is naturally 4 divisions higher? No.

I'm not a conspiracy guy but this is goofy.

I think he was also trying to conserve himself. He spent too much energy hitting gloves. He would have been better off hitting arms. Wish i knew how many jabs equal one clean power shot or counter.

I had him up by 2 points which isnt saying much because Canelo was basically giving away rounds because he was going for the ko. When he landed that left hook early he knew he had something and he was going to land it and win by ko or lose by decision which we all know would not have happened.

Well the sad thing was he was up on the cards with a round and a half left ....
But you just had the feeling the first shot Canelo landed would fold him

He didnt throw the right because Canelo was looking to land that left hook which he did early and Kov didnt want to take too many of those.

Yeah, but that round and a half may as well have been 12 rounds long. Canelo turned up the heat in the 11th and even if he didn't knock Kovalev out he was going to turn it up to 11 in the 12th and then Kovalev was 100% done, having done absolutely nothing to rough up Canelo throughout the rest of the fight.

He played it safe, which isn't a bad strategy on paper, but he had his best rounds upping the volume and throwing with Canelo without fear.

It is a bad strategy because nobody will win a decision against Alvarez fighting like that. But this shot version of Kovalev couldn't fight in any other way.

The strategy Kovalev employed was totally Buddy McGirts. It wasn't a bad strategy to start the fight, but I thought Kovalev should have employed more of a power jab the further along the fight went. If he would have started landing the jab with a little more force the opportunity to throw his right hand would have opened up.
Instead for the most part, Kovalev was content to just paw with the jab which never is going to get it done against a fighter throwing and landing with real power.

Kovalev at this point in his career probably loses to Canelo with what ever strategy to tried, but I came out of the fight wanting to find out what Canelo would do against a hard punching 175 lbs looking to land with power. We just didn't find that out tonight.

I'll say this about the people criticizing Canelo though, you are all pathetic. All he does is take care of business and you clowns look for every creece to criticize. Just pathetic.

All Canelo does is fighting old past prime fighters, taking PEDs and vacating his title when the opponent isn't old enough. Yeah he shouldn't be criticized for any of that :D peak fanboyism right here.

All he does is keep on winning with who ever they put in front of him.
Canelo's resume is already better than Floyd Mayweather's imo. Canelo has taken on all comers and all types of styles and challenges Floyd shy'd away from.
