That clown just wants a chance to fight to a draw with Canelo for a large paycheck.

 

Same reason De La Hoya couldn't "power punch" Pacquiao. Because you can't just load up and hit a 5'8 elusive middle-weight with a high guard, head-movement, and a small target. And who is also countering you with left hooks.

Please look at Lomachenko vs Rigo. Why didn't Lomachenkjo just "blast out" Rigo? Instead he overwhelmed him with pitty-pat punches for 7 rounds until Rigo couldn't take it anymore. Loma is smart. He had a small elusive target in front of him, so he didn't load up. Instead, he went for volume and accuracy.

SAME GAME PLAN FOR KOVALEV. And it was working, according to the wags on the RBR, where he was way up on many cards.

So did Kovalev almost screw up the whole deal by going out and winning 6-7 of the first 10 rounds? Did they then radio in ear "Sergey, this is not the plan! Get KOed or else your wife gets it!"

I can't stand corruption in the sport of Boxing. There were a lot of things wrong with last night's program that DAZN put on. The main event being oddly delayed solely because of UFC, the champion entering the ring first for the LHW contest, the biased commentary, the post-fight scorecards indicating a fix was clearly in the works...

^These things were inexcusable.

Having said that... I have reviewed this fight's conclusion multiple times and from several angles.

Kovalev had the deck stacked him against by the Golden Boy machine leading up to the fight, but the knockout he suffered was actually in progress beginning with the chopping right hand to his left temple seen at 0:54 seconds of the 11th round. He buckled there -- that shot definitely shook him up -- and Saul capitalized because he knew.

No dive... though it's "possible" that Kovalev's slightly questionable punch resistance was affected by the contractually obligated weight shenanigans he agreed to.

 

I didn’t watch the fight, so I can’t really comment on if it was fixed or not. But there is too much shady stuff surrounding Canelo.

It does seem Kovalev was shot to pieces though from what I read on here. Hesitation to throw power punches is usually a sign.

 

He thought it would be an easy fight, as did a lot of people.

I wouldn't say he dominated the fight. He was only arguably winning (I had Kovalev up 6-4 after 10) because Canelo wasn't throwing enough punches. Canelo was very capable of throwing more and winning a couple more rounds but he was just pacing himself, being super cautious, etc. I mean every time Canelo stepped in there he was landing quality power punches.

 

Only 44.4% of this forum are utterly stupid (and voted 'yes')… I actually expected this to be higher.

NO-ONE is saying Kovalev got himself KO'd on person.

 

Many casuals did. However Canelo is still a P4P fighter with excellent explosive power so it was never going to be easy. I just did not expect to see Kovalev forgetting how to throw his two best punches.....just sayin' yo.

 

The only guy Kovalev fought at 175 who was better than Canelo was Ward and that didn’t go smoothly.

 

I thought it would be easy, expected Kovalev to cut through him like a knife through butter.

 

I had it 8-2 I think and yes a lot of the rounds went Kovalev's way because Canelo wasn't punching, but Kovalev was very active and kept Canelo from opening up.

The way Canelo fought against Kovalev was a very interesting style, I love a front foot counter puncher, but if Kova didn't gas, and I'm not sure Canelo had anything to do with him gassing, people would be arguing over how fair a decision was, something which has plagued Canelo throughout his career.

Whilst he always fights the best opposition around, there's always room for debate over his greatest victories (lara, trout, golovkin, jacobs) its only really Cotto out of his top tier victories that no one debates.

I'm excited to see what's next. Hopefully one of Golovkin, Callum Smith or Beterbiev.
