Boy vs Man type of fight, slapped and badly schooled to embarrassment, be like a whirlwind!

 

Never ceases to amaze how people bring up about roy suffering a KO loss to Tarver but then fail to mention Roy went the distance in a competitive fight with Tarver after that

 

RJJ did go the distance in the 3rd fight with Tarver, however he was clearly outpointed and was very cautious throughout the fight. RJJ only really came to life in Rounds 3-5 if I recall, aside from those rounds it was a very lackluster performance from RJJ and a clear Tarver win.

But I mentioned the Tarver KO to say that RJJ was well into his decline as an athlete by the time he fought Calzaghe, and I don't think mentioning RJJ Tarver 3 is really that relevant to the fact that Jones had declined by then. RJJ went into Tarver 3 with a safety first mentality. He didn't look like he was trying to win in that fight, only trying to survive.

IMHO RJJ improved tremendously between the 3rd Tarver fight and the 3 wins against Ajamu, Hanshaw and Trinidad. Obviously those were easier opponents, but the confidence was back. Even against Calzaghe while he was being outpointed, unlike for most of Tarver 3, vs Calzaghe, RJJ did look like he was trying to win.

 

Calzaghe - But Joe would also have to beat all the fixes that come with a Canelo fight.

 

I could see Clenelo taking a BS decision. But Joe would swarm him with volume. Kovalev kind of fought like a poor mans Calzaghe and he was ahead on most cards at the time of the stoppage.
