P4P is more about accomplishments themselves than individual perceptions of them. As a three weight champ who is unifying belts, he is almost definitionally P4P.
You're right, he's top three. What do Rigondeaux, Magdaleno and Frampton all have in common? They all fought scared, and they all managed to get hurt regardless. None of them stood and slugged It out with one of the biggest punchers in the sport. Walters, he's another story altogether, he should have been fighting at lightweight. Who cares, that match exemplifies the weight divisions exist for a reason idiom. Styles make fights, this was a match where you don't hook with a hooker applied to both men. And they did it anyway. Donaire has always been tough as nails, Inoue proved to be tough as nails. They went to war, put on a FOTY candidate. And it can be argued, Naoya beat the sharpest, most focused, most tenacious beastly version of Nonito, in his rightful division, that we've seen in years. I said he was going to be a handful in this tournament, and I was right, all the way up until the last round of it. This was truly a passing of the torch match, that had to happen. The old King wasn't willing to go down without a fight, the new King had to tear the crown off of his head by force. It was an absolutely beautiful match, and elevated both men in the process, neither man's stock dropped in the least. And most importantly, Nonito got the fitting send-off he deserved, and possibly became even more of a legend in the process.
his next fight is against the green machine. I see your point. it's unfortunate we'll probably never get the Crawford Spence fight especially now after his car accident.
Not to take anything away from inoue but it really makes me think what could have been if prime nonito had the skills displayed by current nonito. Bbbrrrrr gives me shivers
Well you gotta think too that Inoue also hasn’t reached his prime (has he?) so in a few years when he does, and he did fight a prime Nonito, that would be a different story. But I’m sure the current Inoue would still give a prime Nonito problems.
you're right this was his first real test and we're only gonna see how much he has grown in his next fights
Yeah, on the ESPN list they have Mikey Garcia at ten and no Beterbiev. Better? Let's check the boxrec p4p ratings. Ah, Inoue is #32. And the boxingforum24 brain trust that put together Transnational Boxing Rankings has Canelo at 1 Inoue at 4, and Josh Taylor at 10 for some reason. BWAA has Canelo at 3 and Inoue at 4 but they voted in late October. The Scene has Crawford number 1 and Inoue number 2 but it looks two or three months out of date. The boxrec ratings have a flaw. They base your point value on what you've done. This leads to cherry picking when a once good opponent has declined without actually losing. They should keep these scores showing the fighter's track record before the fight, but they should keep another ledger showing what they did after the fight too. So between the two scores you have have an average. If a guy goes on a five fight losing streak, after you beat him, you'd lower the rating of the win. That's fair.
What always happens to Khan, doesn't make the performance great. You know you can look like **** and still get a stoppage?
