If SRR had pulled it off against Joey Maxim would there have been a showdown with Archie Moore?

The fight was discussed a few times, or so I've read. Moore wanted a deal that involved an investment that would have set both of them for a long time. Robinson wanted the big sum immediately.
I believe if the money is right, SRR will take the fight. And in the early 50s he would make it interesting but possibly that's as good as he could do.

 

Yes, a super fight between the two was in discussion twice. Sugar Ray Robinson potential bout with then young Gold medallist and soon to be heavyweight champ Floyd Patterson.

 

There's a chance. Moore would have been in line for Ray's first defense if he had kept hold of the title and not moved straight back down. Or maybe Ray would have retired even if he had won.

There was talk in 1955 of the two fighting when Robinson had regained the middleweight title and Moore was still light heavyweight. 1952 would have been a better fight.

 

At that stage I'd have put money on Moore.

 

I suspect that he would have vacated and stepped back down to middle.

 

Knowing how ambitious and money hungry Robinson was he would’ve most likely demanded a heavyweight title shot, since with his name and the light heavyweight title in his possession I can’t see Walcott and his management not jumping at the chance to fight Ray Robinson, which would’ve been a huge money fight for the time.

Robinson most likley wouldn’t have had anything to do with Moore, who at the time brought nothing to the table and was all risk.

 

No I don't think so.Maxim was a good boxer without real power.Archie was something else, Ray and Archie had dinner to discuss a potential fight. Archie was for it Ray non committal.I dont think Robinson would have taken that fight,and ,if he did he would have been knocked out.
Ray was basically a big welterweight.Archie a big light heavy with top end power.

 

Agreed, Ray couldn't have beaten a 175 Moore... I'd like to see Robinson have fought a young middleweight Moore! I might take Archie there as well.

 

At any stage. Moore was too big and too good.

I have no idea if they ever seriously discussed it but over 15 rounds it would have been a real tall order for Ray ..

 

They discussed it - Ray talks about it in his autobiography iirc.

 

Robinson actually sat down to discuss a match up with Archie. Robinson demanded 60% I believe and Archie was only willing to go 50-50 as he was champion. So Archie actually walked away from the fight if that's to be believed. Big egos stopped a fair few super fights.
