Boxnation was before it’s time. If BoxNation launched now as just an app, £10 a month, you wouldn’t get any complaints. Now it’s lost Frank and 99% of its good fights I’m utterly shocked it’s still going.
Boxnation was class for a while. Lots of boxing at home and abroad for 10 pound a month. Plenty of boxing programmes etc. Unfortunately it must've been losing a lot of money and Frank had BT in his sights.
His fighters wanted to be on a mainstream channel that’s why they all deserted to Hearn, as is said above it was 5 years before it’s time, being the home of US fights in the middle of the night will never attract huge numbers. Going to DAZN to launch in the UK big time you need football even Joshua assuming he don’t lose popularity alone won’t do it, to get the football it takes billions, Sky and BT are subsidising the sports rights through their other income streams, to launch a stand alone app without phone/broadband or basic entertainment tiers is going to result in either huge subscription literally in the £40-50 a month bracket or them making huge losses, the rights being broken down into small packages is almost irrelevant, if they get one or two it will get a backlash for consumers as that then means you need three packages for all the football, to have any chance of making it work they need to go all in or get the vast majority.
Warren’s stable was garbage when BN was on for long periods of time. Let’s not forget he didn’t have Frampton or Warrington, Dubois wasn’t even a professional and Fury was fighting on Sky (v Klitschko) and before that a combination of channels including terrestrial. It survived on the strength of its international angle. Wasn’t just obscure stuff either. I’m sure it had quite a lot of Mayweather/Pacquiao/Canelo fights as well.
I looked at the schedule on boxnation the other day and the next live fight is on the 13th of December, I wonder if anyone still subscribes to it. DAZN should take over the channel especially if they get football as well.
besides the sports, hbo cocked up big time letting game of thrones get rushed how it did. the popularity has fizzled out now so the potential money from the spin offs has lessened, and they won't have another show on that level again. doesn't look good for them, but it's a bit sad when you think of how many amazing fight nights and shows they gave us. no one has recaptured the big fight night vibe like they produced. and frankly most boxing productions these days are rubbish.
Champions League rights in the UK? BT owns CL rights in the UK right now, not Sky. And BT will fight that tooth and nail, believe me..they aren't gonna give that up without a fight. I don't think Sky are going anywhere any time soon. And DAZN would be picking on the wrong company if they tried to rival them in the UK. ESPECIALLY if they try to touch Premier League rights in the UK. Sky will bet big if they really need to. Wouldn't read much into that.
After making the biggest star in boxing wait for an hour and half so they could show the MMA fights on the big screens, I hope DAZN crash and burn. They don’t care about or respect boxing. That night they pretty much said MMA is a bigger more important sport than boxing.
Will you calm down ffs. Any mention of the names Fury, Saunders or Warren and you're triggered. The point was there was a lot of boxing on it, at home and abroad. It was great value for money for boxing fans for a period of time.
Warren’s stable was the best in the UK when the channel launched, it kept going for years based on hardcore fans subscribing for the international fights of which they were probably paying peanuts to get. It’s still on air now as it’s included in a BT Sport subscription, they will be paying a certain figure to have it included, that plus whatever advertisement revenue it still generating means it’s quite literally money for almost nothing for Warren.
DAZN in Canada shows literally everything (all Premier League football, NFL, Matchroom boxing etc) for $20 Canadian a month (12 quid). If they were to be successful in their bid for Champions League rights then a monthly fee of a tenner is plausible if unlikely. I suspect Sky would up their rights fees to keep the boxing but DAZN would need content for a 2021 launch.
I stand by my words, they won't exist in 20 years, you can't buy all these expensive rights and charge £10 a month, it just don't work, it's simple maths.
I just imagine guys like the above sat in a boardroom meeting with DAZN explaining why there business model won’t work to a load of billionaires
