Jeff Harding vs Dennis Andries II Man this trilogy deserves more recognition than it gets. To me it’s certainly on par with Duran Barkley and JCC vs Meldrick, so you can see why these were not FOTY, but it’s right up there with both of them IMO! Harding seems to try and box mire during the early rounds than fight 1 and does not work the body quite as hard or good, but by round 4 the momentum shifts in his direction. The assault by Andries was either going to stop Harding or wear out Andries who was looking arm weary at the time of the KO blow. Harding does not beat the count! Andries evens the score in 7! 1-3 Andries 4-6 Harding Andries by TKO 7
Philly, I saw this bout live on CBS (I think it was CBS) back in the day and I recall a damn good fight. I don't read anyone's report until after I've scored and I see now how you felt many rounds were close. I too felt that way. I had it a little heavier to Alli, but one could also see the heavy investment Harry was making towards the body. Alli, was catching him with the flashier, eye-catchers but Harry was going to be taking this to the late rounds. here we go. Round 1: 10-9 Arroyo Round 2: 10-8 Alli (scores a knockdown) Round 3: 10-10 Even Round 4: 10-9 Alli Round 5: 10-9 Alli Round 6: 10-9 Alli Round 7: 10-9 Arroyo Round 8: 10-9 Alli Round 9: 10-9 Alli Round 10: 10-10 Even Round 11: TKO win for Arroyo Total: 98-93 Alli through 10 completed rounds. Like you said, some of these rounds were very tight and I could have ended up with more even as well. I just have one question for you, Philly. You marked that Alli had a point deducted after the 10th because of a punch after the bell. I re-marked my scorecard to 97-93 because of that but I rewatched the end of the 10th and the 11th. Alli swung after the bell but missed. Bernstein didn't mention Tony Perez taking a point and I looked up a couple of newspaper articles on the fight and nothing mentions a point deduction. I tend to take your word for it, but I just wanted to ask are you certain on that?
trying to see what I can find about that? Here is a quote and a link but will see what I can confirm? Between the 10th and 11th, ring an- nouncer Michael Buffer informed the crowd that Alli had been penalized. The announcement upset Alli, who said, "I was upset. I wanted to know why. I was too excited and overanx- ious and I wanted to knock him out." Perhaps only in boxing can an ath- lete be excited and full of energy and zest and, less than 30 seconds later, be flat on his back, motionless, and the subject of instant medical supervision. https://boxingdvds.myshopify.com/bl...-turns-back-terrence-allis-stubborn-challenge Edit: found another source: Alli rallied somewhat in the 9th and 10th rounds. Judges Frank Brunette of Rahway, N.J., and Donald Woodland of Columbus, Ohio, had the bout even after 10. Judge Carol Castellano of Jackson Heights, Queens, had Arroyo ahead, 95-93, on the 10-point must system. But had not the referee deducted a point from Alli for hitting after the bell ending the 10th round, the challenger would have been ahead on two of the official cards. https://www.nytimes.com/1985/01/13/sports/arroyo-retains-lightweight-crown.html
I can’t find a copy of the fight with between round action and the sky sports commentary did not even reference it. But it was a lame deduction I agree, it did not look like the punch landed at all to me? Fortunately it did not matter in this case
Cornelius Boza-Edwards vs Roberto Elizondo a very enjoyable scrap! A shame that 2 minutes are missing from round 2 due to technical difficulties, oh well. Boza never was a super fast starter and this is norm. Elizondo is able to have some success inside early. 3-4 Boza begins to work his jab and create the space for a mid range fight. Elizondo gets cut in 4 and it seems to bother him for much of the night. Rounds 5-10 are fought at a very fast pace, but 8-10 are filled with some furious exchanges to cap off the night. The crowd roared with a standing ovation so I doubt you will be disappointed by watching this one. Elizondo either couldn’t or wouldn’t turn it into an inside war, he did good inside but for the most part when and where it wa fought was controlled by Boza! Good fun fight 1-2 Elizondo 3-7 Boza 8 Elizondo 9-10 Boza 97-93....96-94 would be fair as well.
Watched a nice little bantamweight fight today between 2 hot prospects at the time. This is the second fight between Richie Sandoval and Harold Petty. Not a great fight but very decent with some speedy, clean punching. Round 1: 10-9 Sandoval Round 2: 10-9 Sandoval Round 3: 10-9 Sandoval Round 4: 10-9 Sandoval Round 5: 10-9 Petty Round 6: 10-9 Sandoval Round 7: 10-9 Petty Round 8: 10-9 Sandoval Round 9: 10-10 Even Round 10: 10-10 Even Total: 98-94 Sandoval Actual scores were a bit closer. 95-95 Even and two scores of 96-94 for Sandoval. Petty's punches were very crisp, but he simply couldn't match Sandoval's workrate. Two outstanding fighters and a real crying shame Petty never getting a shot at the bantamweight title, despite 2 wins over Zaragoza. Sandoval too, should have given him the opportunity after 2 tough fights.
Philly, it doesn't seem that long ago that I scored this fight, but it was actually about a year ago. This is what I wrote at the time. Both you and I acknowledged the veracity of rounds 8-10. Round 1: 10-9 Elizondo Round 2: 10-9 Elizondo - I saw the first portion of the round and the last portion. A power failure in the arena took out the action in between. I felt Elizondo controlled what I did see and the announcer stated that Elizondo really 'sparkled' that round. So I had to take a leap of faith. Round 3: 10-9 Boza Round 4: 10-9 Boza Round 5: 10-10 Even Round 6: 10-10 Even Round 7: 10-9 Boza Round 8: 10-9 Elizondo Round 9: 10-9 Boza Round 10: 10-9 Boza Total: 97-95 Boza Edwards This fight was amazing. Fought at break neck speed and phonebooth warfare. Rounds 8, 9 & 10 were incredible, but actually, every round was.
Jeff Harding vs Dennis Andries III Another fun slugfest to bring a close to this vastly underrated trilogy! Andries boxes strong early and outboxes and outlands Harding through the first 4. But I feel like after 4+ he was holding on. Harding outworks him the rest of the way in many close and exciting rounds. Andries would make them difficult to score landing 3-5 big shots only to take more in return. I feel like he was expending his energy loading up for a big punch, while Harding was just consistently on the attack. What do you like more 3 punches with a good solid land thrown in or a consistently solid 8-10. Close but I don’t see how the commentary had Andries winning except for the fact that they were British? 1-3 Andries 4-8 Harding 9 Even 10 Harding 11 Andries 12 Harding 116-113 Harding (Harding 115-113, 115-114, 114-114 for the judges...I can see the draw if you give Andries 4/9 but no way do I see him winning this one!)
Cornelius Boza-Edwards vs John Montes I must confess that I simply love 10 rounders! So much action and punching! I do hate the fight Dr. “Boza is punching him with punches” not sure how he articulated that so succinctly! Thanks to @salsanchezfan for bringing this one to my attention! a tale of 3 fights that is much closer than my scorecard reveals. I scored similar to the ref, while the other 2 judges saw it closer on the cards. Boza 8-2 or 6-4 seem realistic. Montes very quick of hand and foot works the body well, and shoots out to an early lead. Boza boxing sharp behind the jab evens it up after 4. 5-10 explodes into an infighting display the rest of the way. With Boza landing the bigger shots but Montes works the body really good. Had this been 12+ rounds he may have gotten a reward for that body attack. 1-2 Montes 3-7 Boza (6 a 10-8 rd) 8 Even 9-10 Boza 98-92 on my card but I can see 96-95 as reasonable card. Very fun fight. Many rounds Montes controls for a minute and Boza closes for a minute, which did you prefer...tough to score but real easy to watch!
Alexis Arguello vs Rolando Navarrete Unless you want to celebrate the precision punching of Arguello there is not a bunch to see here. 1 Even 2-4 Arguello Navarrete gets cut in 3 Arguello turns it up and it is stopped after 4
I have to check out that Boza-Montes fight. Sounds like just the ticket. BTW, here is one I did a few months back. Cornelius Boza-Edwards v Guy Villegas. It would remind you of Boza against John Verderosa. A young hotshot trying to take down the veteran, only the veteran had just too much in the tank. Villegas was all speed and got off to a great start. Round 1: 10-9 Villegas Round 2: 10-9 Villegas Round 3: 10-10 Even Round 4: 10-9 Boza Round 5: 10-10 Even Round 6: 10-9 Villegas Round 7: TKO for Boza Total: (through 6 completed rounds) 59-57 Villegas Although I had Villegas up at the end, never at any time would one get the feeling that Villegas could last. But still a good contrast in the speed of Villegas against the power of Boza. I think you guys will enjoy this one.
