We also have to remember who’s job is what here. What does good promotion look like? Your boxer becoming well known, earning great money, getting rich and making you rich by selling loads of tickets and driving revenue, to the best of their ability.

Froch on Primetime TV fighting for a world title in Finland doesn’t suggest great promotion.

 

A very poor effort. Froch should have been popular and ultimately was as the sold out fights at the O2/Wembley demonstrate. He had the style, fanbase and ability for it. Mick couldn’t capitalise on it.

 

Some one should havd told mick if its loyalty hes looking for he should have invested in a dog and not tyson

 

You don't screw over the people who gave you the leg up when starting out. Mick seems like the sort of guy you could phone if you are in a pickle and he'd be there to help. He had the class in that video not to go into details, but he was obviously hurt.

Mick is good at finding talent. It's the last bit he falls short. Mick has never had a ppv star. Froch was after he left and fury is going to be afterwards as well. He tried a YouTube ppv. The fact he hasn't tried since tells you a lot. In fact 2 YouTube stars never put there fight on YouTube. Despite all this, I do like mick Hennessy. He wears his heart on his sleeve and is very passionate about the sport.

 

Not many seem to take Hennessy seriously, but he made Fury the HW champ and a multi millionaire at a time he actually should have been suspended. That's Hearn level of promoting right there.

 

I think he did try it again with that Pink Tyson, sure it was for about 2 or 3 quid, but I could be mistaken.

Also the YouTube guys did the ppv for the first fight and I think they sold over a million

 

My initial thought was that in bold. As sure as night follows day, fighters will leave their promoter when there is a better deal on the table elsewhere. The only surefire way to avoid that is to make sure that there isn't a better deal elsewhere.

Fight promotion is a ruthless and in many ways thankless task. Even when you get to the point where you're putting on massive PPV events in packed out national stadia, the same fans who happily bought your product will boo the **** out of you when your face appears on the big screen.

In the modern era, so much depends on the TV deals. Warren's 2nd career boom was on the back of a huge Sky deal, just at the time his stable was buzzing and Sky was in Pac-Man mode after the success of the Premier League.

It may be that Hennessy is too nice to be an elite boxing promoter. Maybe he just didn't get the big breaks and deals he needed to capitalise on the talent he had at his disposal. Maybe he's just a crap promoter. Either way, it's pretty standard fare for boxers to dump promoters.

 

Agree 100%. Anyone would be hurt/upset if they was in the same position....loyalty is a hard thing to find in people these days.

But say your neighbour was telling you their broadband was rubbish. It cost twice as much as yours, kept dropping connection, and when it wasn’t working it took ages to get it fixed. But they decided to stick with the provider because they valued loyalty.

That’s not a good thing. It’s being idiotic. I really think the turning point for Froch was the Taylor fight. Worked his backside off to win a world title, and his first defence is in some middle of the nowhere place. The fight is a legitimate all time great British world title performance, and nobody saw it. He must have been so frustrated because he was promoted so poorly.

 

He operates with Channel 5 on a very small budget and has consistently put on domestic fights which on the whole are usually entertaining. That’s enough for me- I’d like to see him focusing on getting a consistent venue for his fights (York Hall is perfect) and working with small hall promoters to showcase domestic boxing on terrestrial TV.

If somehow he uncovers the next big thing he should look at building towards PPV but only in exceptional cases.

Mick is a great matchmaker but clearly hasn’t got the backing of his broadcaster to go any higher than the occasional big fight.

 

I totally understand why Froch left him. Tyson Fury on the other hand should have kept a working relationship with Mick. The main reason is Mick worked night and day for two years on Tysons UKAD case. Them when it was sorted Tyson left without fighting under him again. I understand why Tyson did not want him to promote him but he should have done what Hughie Fury has done and kept Mick on as his manager. It was clear Mick seem him as family and always fought for him and understands boxing purses eg. Credentials for a good manager. If I was him thats the route I would ho down now. Identify talent and become their manager.
