Been checking out wilder as of late , I use to always hate on the guy... like alot . The dude always seemed cringey to me the way he whispers and acts mysterious. His lack of boxing skills use to make me dislike him at one point .As of latley though the past year or so the guy has grown on me . His power truly is a gift to the sport the way he finishes off his opponents in dramatic fashion whether he wins or loses.. I appreciate the personality he brings to the sport very entertaining and as well I appreciate his power. Note : do not get butthurt because I am appreciating deontay wilder . I appreciate all heavyweights Joshua , fury , ortiz , usyk , parker, chisora , Ruiz , whyte, Miller , pulev , povetkin , and any other heavyweights you can think of .
In over 40 fights he has 2 good opponents on his record and one of them he only fought because he was out the ring for 2 years. Is he getting better? Yes. But underatted? No chance.
Under appreciated. Ggg had just as soft a resume up until Jacobs and some were calling him the best mw of all time because he had a more appealing style of fighting. Imo wilders lack of skills makes him more of a marvel, not less
I would just like to see Wilder, with his somewhat unique style/attributes fight against other belt-holders or a hungry/solid/uncompromised opponent such as Hrgovic or Usyk. Simple as that. He's probably underrated and underappreciated because he's held that belt for years and hasn't taken the next step towards some kind of legacy. Turning negotiations into a saga has come across as a ducking strategy. And by uncompromised I mean ... someone who is not out of shape, old, or coming in after a long layoff (or all three) AND someone who is in no way 'in-house'. As I posted in the past, rightly or wrongly, I get a 'professional wrestling' vibe off Wilder ... be it the suspicion of a dive by Malik Scott, or him being ringside for Ortiz's fight against Martz and the whole thing looked a bit contrived. I thought Wilder-Povetkin was going to be the time that Wilder would/could gain full credibility but that never eventuated. Bottom line ...I understand where the OP is coming from ... but after all these years I really don't care about Wilder vs a Breazale, Washington, etc type, or even Fury. He should just fight the Joshua/Ruiz winner or Usyk or Hrgovic.
He is an exciting fighter, but he'll be past prime soon and he only fought 3 decent boxers so far. Stevern W. Ortiz W. Fury D. He'll be brutally KOes soon.
If he is underappreciated then it's his own doing!!! If he is not getting his dues it's because of all the ducking and cherry picking that he did his whole career. He has now had some meaningful fights and made it out the other end. But because he has ducked just about the whole devision, then questions still remain in people's minds!! Wilder has himself to blame.
Hell yeah he underappreciated Olympic medal Holds the true WBC heavyweight crown Tried to go to Russia to face Povetkin who juiced to escape it Provides fantastic entertaining fights Tried to fight Joshua for years and offered 50 million Was the only man with the cajones to step to Luis Ortiz after the division ducked him X2 Knocked the gypsy peasent unconscious and made him famous because he escaped with his life (which is considered a win) Tried to rematch the gypsy peasents who ran to fight bums and do WWE Wilder has made the most he could of his era. He's not a liar or a drugs cheat, he fights for his beautiful child who sadly has a serious illness which inspires Wilder I belive. All action, brutal puncher with heart to spare. No he didn't have a 25 year 7600 fight amateur career like some worshipped others so he had to be a quick learner. Hrgovic? Usyk? One right hand, that's all it takes, one right hand and they are DONE I appreciate Deontay and when it's all said and done so will everyone else.
Total fraud. First fighter in history to target the medically unfit. Lost to a guy who had to lose 150 pounds to get in the ring. Beats up on fat guys, high blood pressure guys, school teachers, pastry chefs, Las Vegas Hookers, and Mexican Burrito Mascots. Also a horrible ****er who compares himself to real legends, and talks about killing people. Not too bright on top of everything.
Fury slaps and holds for 12 rds yet is beloved. Why? Wilder a beast and a feat to see. Props to the guy.
I think the degree of success in achieving or setting up victories with illegal punches-rabbit, to the top of the head, etc... Bears mentioning to. Without any of that, how many losses might he have?
The guy is better than Breazeale I give him that. But with fair rules, I have him in the same ballpark as Ortiz. 50/50 fight at this point, with peds and cheating: 75/25 for Wilder. Like when they drained Ortiz of blood with 13 samples before the fight just "to check" he was okay. Then they took away 7 inches of reach from Ortiz just 2 days short of the fight when people already had laid their bets partially based on that. Then you had the doctor stoppage incident during the fight and also the spinning backfists Wilder was allowed to throw from behind on the neck at the old man. So it's hard to judge his true potential when he gets away with all of this. I hope somebody bump the Wilder history list thread for more references.
