Shy'd away from the real challenges of his time too many times to be taken seriously.

 

when I think of Calzaghe I think of 168 lbs - when I think of Michael Spinks I think of 175lbs -JC moved up to 175 after the age of 34-35 and did well but I think he was one of the best in 168....Michael Spinks the same at 175

both men had success in higher weights but that's not where they excelled- the fight would be competitive at 175 but prime vs prime they both lived in their respective divisions- same could be said for Marvin Hagler and Carlos Monzon

Duran was a natural 135 lber but he was great vs Leonard in fight 1 at 147 lbs and the Barkley fight- he even gave Hagler tough moments but the older and you get the harder it gets to play tricks with your body- you need to be in condition to get into condition-and Roberto burned the candle at both ends- but a brilliant-rugged- intelligent gladiator

Spinks would win; I think he would have knocked Joe out.

At LHW, I think Joe would come off second best to a number of the top level mid 70s early 80s LHWs like Conteh, Galindez, Saad, Qawi, Mustafa etc.

 

If Joe goes for it, he loses bravely but brutally anytime after the eighth. But for eight rounds Calzaghe would be in the fight, holding his own.

If Joe is fazed early and fights just to survive, then I could see him hearing the final bell, but being on the end of a near shut out lost.

Davis showed a way Calzaghe could compete when he got the jab going, it thus could be competitive for a long time, but it would still not be enough.

A prime 27 y/o Mike also does so but puts him down to stay with a swarm after he rises IF he does. And while we're at it, @ 75 Calz gets stopped by Foster, Galindez, Qawi, M Saad M, M Johnson, James Scott, the Mike Rossman of his title win, Yaqui Lopez wears him down and he gets picked apart by Eddie M M. Prime Virgil Hill wins for sure. Remember 6'4 Vonzell Johnson? He KO's Calz.
