Surely the fact that the fights were so close together should have made it EASIER to make weight?

Its not like he had anytime to baloon up in weight

The excuses make no sense and he was fighting a guy half his size.

    No excuses he got DONE

Kovalev had a built in legit excuse for this fight from the get go. Canelo wanted the fight for September, but it's just very much in character that he pushed for the Novemver 2nd date. He said, he doesn't care if he pleases anybody, I guess he knew this would be another fight with an asterisk. On the other hand he is right, the critisism will fade eventually. He is just playing his cards as they were dealt to him, I can understand that, but that makes him unlikeable to me. I guess he couldn't care less.
Kovalev wasn't the guy in power here, except that he could squeeze a couple of more dollars out of his title. That's also understandable and his whole career lead up to this point, so he couldn't really do the noble thing. Still, that took him down a notch for me.

Much shorter, but the same weight. Canelo walked at 185 lbs between the fights even back in the days when his team claimed he "needed to grow into the middleweight body"

Everyone has a different physiology and genetics.

Look at Kovalev's genetics; balding by his mid 20s, face all wrinkled mid-30s, loose skin around his mouth and eyes, furrows on his forehead, and a bad liver due to excessive drinking. His body type is probably the type that needs a lot of rest and recuperation before going back into camp otherwise it will just accelerate his ageing. He also probably comes from a place in Russia where they aren't expected to live beyond their 60s due to their physiology and geography.

Compare that to Golovkin; mixed Siberian and Korean genetics (looks like a taller and slimmer version of Provodnikov tbh....) barely a wrinkle, smooth muscle definition, cuts very well and has a much better genetic dispositon than Kovalev too.

Kovalev probably gorged on food after the Yarde fight as do most fighters.

I don't feel sorry for Kovalev, he just got 12 million dollars. What I'm saying is that very likely the people screaming about him selling out (1) probably would have done the same themselves and (2) Kovalev didn't take a dive, he took what he had to work with and tried to win with it and (3) Canelo stacks the deck again and tries to claim some sort of amazing victory. If Canelo was a card player they'd have to invent a new name for a 5-ace hand. Maybe the "ginger flush".

Knowing that the Canelo fight was coming up?

Dumb on his behalf if so.

If he has a very long rest period to recover and also juices out of his skin MAYBE he can turn back the clock. He needs to fix his liver first though.

Canelo does the same thing; September to May is his "rest and juice" period. It's enough time to cycle on and off undetected and his body then has a 4 month window to peak at its optimum and fit in 2 fights. Genius.

Maybe Kova should have juiced to level the playing field.

He accepted the fight and lost. I don't think the excuses change the result. I did think it was a fast turn around, but he made the decision.

Heck Povetkin has more wear and tear on him and he looks like hes still in his 20’s. Thats because he takes care of himself, unlike Kovalev.
