Yes, in a way Kovalev sold out, but blaming him more than the actual corrupting entity in Canelo/GB is absurd.

This fiasco once again demonstrated the extreme advantage of being the overwhelming money power in a fight negotiation. They make an offer the opponent can't refuse and then proceed to rig everything in their favour. Yes, the opponent can say no, but then he doesn't get the fight. And they know that human nature will rarely reject offers that can't be refused, hence the term. Another close version of this was when fellow PPV diva scum Cotto made Geale an offer he couldn't refuse, then drained him to 157. Geale spoke of the dynamics at the time, similar to Kovalev, feeling trapped by the conditions because he couldn't refuse the offer.

What this is, plain and simple, is cowardly cheating from the money power fighter. Anyone who defends this is a piece of garbage, and obviously it is defended all the time because there are so many pieces of garbage who worship the money power fighters.

Very few fighters/people would have the pure honour code to reject once in a lifetime money in order to avoid a handicap and this is why the process works so well. I think in this case Kovalev's team did him wrong because he had more leverage than someone like Rocky Fielding. Who else would they fight at 175 really? I'm sure he could have gotten slightly better terms.

But though Canelo is scum, Kovalev will have to take some responsibility, like all who decide to play this game with the devil. He could have demanded proper terms or refused the fight, putting his record and glory above the payday, as he was surely not a poor guy by now. And he's going to have to live with the demons now, I guess.

The good thing is that Beterbiev doesn't struggle to make 175lbs and doesn't really walk around above 185-190lbs either so any IBF style rehydration clause will not cripple him like it did to Kovalev.
