There are four championship belts per devision (IBF, WBO, WBA & WBC) not to mention all of the sub category belts now in existance such as: WBA ''regular'', interim titles, international titles, franchise championships (WBC), IBO and the WBF among other minor belts and special WBC titles (money belt, Mayan belt etc). With so many belts in existiance what is the value of being a ''champion'' when there can be/exisit multiple ''champions'' in the same division? Take into acccount the corruptness of some organisations and it could be argued that the belts mean nothing at all.
It's mostly a joke. Nowadays if you end your career without having won at least one of the many secondary belts your career is pretty much a bust.
The belts in pro boxing have the same value as the WWE wrestling belts. Basically they show your designation of the respective sanctioning bodys chosen, protected money maker.
they don't mean as much anymore. And the sport is watered down so. Boxing might never get to where it was, but it is still good.
The minor belts like the interims, WBA regulars, etc, mean absolutely nothing at all to me. IBO means nothing me. I generally recognize the boxer with the greatest fraction of the four bigger belts -- the WBO, WBA, IBF, and WBC belts -- as the true "champion." The boxers with lesser fractions of these four belts are at the borderline: important, but not true champions of their divisions. In other words, I only view unified champions as real champions.
As more and more versions of the organisations titles are created, the more worthless holding one of those titles becomes. At the highest level (Canelo, Lomachenko, Inoue) where fighters are so good they can move up and down the weight classes. The belts are largely a side show. At everything below the highest level, belts mean alot to the fighters. But less to the fans than they have ever done.
I no longer pay them any mind Its the competitive fights that intrest me and only that Hence im not that interested in boxing at the moment
Yes completely worthless, I don’t know why everyone is not in agreement on this. Whoever is number one on Boxrec or ring magazine is champion, everyone else is just a contender. I know ring and Boxrec do not agree right now, Andy Ruiz is the real champion and the man to beat, everyone else is just another boxer that has not made it yet.
The Ring mag belt has absolutely no credibility these days. The day Oscar took it over & fired all the good writers it became a laughing stock
