Rolando Navarrete vs Chung Il Choi

Well this was not the slugfest that fight city bills it as...
    https://www.thefightcity.com/rolando-navarrete-chung-choi-manila-boxing/

But it was a very technical hard hitting chess match. Navarrete struggles with the speed and reach and superior boxing? Of Choi and Choi has difficulty with the heavier punches of Navarrete as well as his body work. A very fun fight to check out.

choi drops Navarrete at the end of 5 and it seems there is controversy over the round being shortened. The fight seems to be synced properly so it does seem Choi was robbed of 7-8 seconds in which to follow up on a stunned Navarrete.

    1 Choi
    2 Navarrete
    3-6 Choi (5 a 10-8 round)
    7 Navarrete
    8 Choi
    9-10 Navarrete (10 a 10-8 round)

Navarrete stops Choi in 11 while trailing 95-93 on my card. Definitely worth adding to your to watch list.

Watched the Boza-Edwards - Montes fight last night. I was surprised the judges had it so close (one point and two point cards), particularly when you factor in the knockdown. The ref's card of 99-93 seemed a better reflection.

It heated it up nicely from about round 4 onwards and by the end it looked like every other Boza fight - two guys throwing punches furiously. Montes did really well to recover from the knockdown in the 6th. The way he went down looked like he wasn't getting back up but he fought hard over the last four rounds and maybe that recovery influenced the judges's scorecards.

Rolando Navarrete vs Rafael Limon I

This fight is well worth the rewatch! Non stop action, ebbs and flows and momentum shifts, stunning blows, a great come from behind victory! + I always enjoy a good south paw vs South paw battle.

    RBR
    1 Navarrete
    2 Limon
    3 Navarrete
    4 Navarrete
    5 Navarrete
    6 Limon
    7 Navarrete
    8 Limon
    9 Limon
    10 Navarrete
    11 Navarrete

Limon stops Navarrete while trailing 96-93 on my card. Navarrete makes his 2nd and last defense of his title. Part of me wonders how much the Navarrete vs Choi fight took out of both men, as Limon would follow that up by stopping both of them! Good valiant battle from both guys with Limon regaining his belt that he lost to Boza!

    edit: 106-103 not 96-93

    Erik Morales vs. In-Jin Chi

Well a decent fight that gets a little dirty, falls short of being a great must watch type of fight. Chi makes Morales work for it, but Morales is just a little bit better. The fight is easy to score and while it looks comfortable on the cards it is hotly contested. Chi just can’t score enough but he is competitive. Rounds 11-12 make it worth the watch but again not a great fight just a pretty good one.

    1 Morales
    2 Chi
    3-5 Morales
    6 Chi
    7-11 Morales (10 a 10-8 rd pt deduction)
    12 Chi
Morales 117-110 I can see 116-111 if you scored 8 for Chi. I didn’t like the deduction in 10 even though chi had been dirty I don’t think it should have been taken. Fortunately it does not matter in the end.

Had to check this out, Philly. For some reason I missed it first time around.

    Round 1: 10-9 Limon
    Round 2: 10-9 Limon
    Round 3: 10-9 Navarette
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-9 Navarette
    Round 6: 10-9 Navarette
    Round 7: 10-9 Navarette
    Round 8: 10-9 Limon
    Round 9: 10-9 Limon
    Round 10: 10-9 Navarette
    Round 11: 10-9 Navarette
    Round 12: Limon stops Navarette

Total (through 11 completed rounds): 106-104 Navarette

Great fight. Some of the rounds are close due to Limon throwing a lot of wild leather and Rolando - with a slower workrate - countering beautifully. Sometimes it became a fine line. BTW, Philly, something is funky with your score. Did you miss a round?

Just watched a fight that I never saw and never knew was out there on youtube. The 1979 slugfest between Alfonso Zamora and Eddie 'Motorboat' Logan. This was scored with the 10 point must rather than the California point system. Bombs away!

    Round 1: 10-9 Zamora
    Round 2: 10-9 Zamora
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
    Round 4: 10-9 Logan
    Round 5: 10-9 Zamora
    Round 6: 10-8 Zamora (scores a knockdown)
    Round 7: 10-9 Zamora
    Round 8: 10-8 Logan (scores a knockdown)
    Round 9: Logan stops Zamora

Total (through 8 completed rounds): 77-74 Zamora

For a guy with so few fights, Logan was amazing. And even more amazing, this was his last fight. Don't know the story, but he went out on a high note.

hoping to watch this next week. What was your take? Did Zamora gas down the stretch or does Logan just catch him right. Seems like from your card that Zamora was having his way through 7? Just curious

Y'know, he was still throwing bombs, but I think he was on shaky pins after getting caught by Logan in the 8th. In the 9th he was really caught and Vince Delgado did a great job in stopping it before Zamora got caught again, because he was out of it.

I believe this is my first time posting here!

    Basilio vs Fullmer 1:

Round 1: 10-9 Basilio. Christ this round was hard to score, I had to pause the video for a long while to make up my mind. A very fast starting first round, both are very good looking on film. The footwork, jab, explosiveness, infighting, all of it is on display. No doubt a quality fight. I think I ended up giving Basilio the first round on aggression. Wish the film was a little clearer.

Round 2: 19-19 Even. Fullmer had good control of the distance and pace with his jab here. Basilio had his moment midway through the round when he staggered Fullmer in a crazy exchange, but Fullmer was cagey and held his own. Fullmer's jab is deceptive, the angle changed a few times.

Round 3: 29-28 Fullmer. Repeat of the last round, the jab and distance was key. Weird thing to say but Fullmer's occasional bouncing is off-putting to me. My coach told me it's a waste of energy so it's weird to see a top guy start bouncing on his toes for no reason when he's half the ring away from Basilio. He isn't even a boxer who fights on his toes like Ali. Probably doesnt even matter since he's in such good condition.

Round 4: 39-37 Fullmer. I hate to say it, because Basilio is REALLY trying to force the fight here, but Fullmer dominated this round. He landed many clean shots and overall showed his superiority over Basilio. It's probably my favoritism that stopped this from being marked a 10-8 round.

Round 5: 48-47 Fullmer. Basilio really laid it on this round, became much more active. Fullmer had his moments but overall Basilio's round.

Round 6: 57-57 Even. WHAT A SLUGFEST. These two went AT IT. Great round. Basilio showed really good head movement here, Fullmer mostly missing. Fullmer made a bit of a rally later on.

Round 7: 67-66 Fullmer. The footage was a bit choppy so I didn't see everything but from what I could glean Fullmer was having the better work.

Round 8: 77-75 Fullmer. Basilio staggered at the end from a counter. Good action this round all together. Footage chopped a bit. Basilio showed good head movement about halfway through.

Round 9: 87-84 Fullmer. Fullmer was more offensive this round. Basilio is tough.

Round 10: 97-93 Fullmer. Great sense of distance by Fullmer. Basilio is looking a bit slower. Fullmer's leaping left hook is always right on the money.

Round 11: 106-103 Fullmer. Alot of missing by Fullmer this round. Basilio keeps up the pressure.

Round 12: 116-102 Fullmer. Basilio really needs to up the pace a bit. Fullmer had a great closing to this round.

Round 13: 125-122 Fullmer. Fullmer mostly missed this round. Like missed alot. Basilio had good inside work. Exhibited good defense.

Round 14: Fullmer TKO. Imo the stoppage was premature as hell. Dunno what that ref was thinking. Basilio had him tied up and was only a little shook by the right. That's some modern boxing stoppage bull****, I'm disgusted this was done by a 1950s referee.

Post fight thoughts: it's hard to fight with a man who's equally tough and strong and game as you, but has better outside control.

Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Juan Diaz I

Not hard to see why this was FOTY in 2009! Plenty of action and furious exchanges, plenty of ebbs and flows and momentum shifts in each round as well as the fight progresses. Diaz brings the pressure early and I think that is why Ledderman has Diaz ahead as well as one of the judges. Each round through 7 is only separated by a few punches according to punch stats so there can be a lot of variables each round. Did you like Diaz pressure and volume of punches or JMM’s counters, body work and accuracy as well as the heavier shots largely IMO. The judges have it 77-75 for each guy and the 3rd 76-76 which is how I saw it. But by the 8th JMM is in control and finishes Diaz in the 9th in a very fun fight.

i gave Diaz all the odd rounds 1-3-5-7 and Marquez all the even rounds 2-4-6-8. 76-76 on my card at time of stoppage. Blood from both guys, both guys rocked, high volume out put from both guys...what more can you hope for!

    Micky Ward vs. Emanuel Burton
I will probably get some heat for this but I don’t find this an exciting fight or a great fight and I would never call this FOTY material. It is a good fun fight with high volume output and exchanges but the defense is non existent and the skill level minimal at least in contrast to what I want in a great fight.

    RBR
    1-3 Ward
    4-5 Burton
    6 Ward
    7 Burton
    8 Ward
    9 Ward 10-8
    10 Burton
Ward 96-93 on my card. Probably won’t make my rewatch list in the next 10 years or so....feel free to check it out, but I wouldn’t tell someone to go out of their way to watch it.

Carl Froch vs Mikkel Kessler I

There may be something rotten in Denmark...but not on this night! I feel the judges got the decision correct! I don’t feel that Kessler won this as much as I feel like Froch gave it away. Rounds 1-3 and 6-8 he just was not busy enough in my mind. I also don’t see how this made Boxing News top 100 (#96) best fights ever? I did however find it more exciting when it happened than on a rewatch and rescore so maybe live made it seem better? I just didn’t feel like either guy did great but Kessler forced the action and landed to me the better shots.

rounds 1-3 Both guys have their moments but Froch (who said he needed to start fast?) just was not busy enough. I feel like Kessler opened a nice lead and didn’t even have to do much to get it.
Rounds 4-5 Froch hits a groove and controls the action taking 2 comfortable rounds. Perhaps giving the illusion that he is winning the fight? But on the 10 pt must I have him behind even though he won his rounds wider.
Rounds 6-8, Kessler again forced the action, both guys doing good work with the jab but Kesslers is sharp and solid and Froch’s is more of a flicking jab. Kessler has tighter defense while Froch is showboating keeping hands low trusting his reflexes which was dumb IMO! 7-8 Kessler turns it up and is in control and is up 6-2 on my card.
9-12 back an forth this is finally turning into a fight and the final 2 rounds are full of action! Not a great fight in my mind but a pretty solid finish.

    1-3 Kessler (Kessler 30-27)
    4-5 Froch (Kessler (48-47)
    6-8 Kessler (Kessler 78-74)
    9 Froch
    10 Kessler
    11 Froch
    12 Kessler (Kessler 116-112)
Kessler 116-112 or 8 rounds to 4. Again I feel like this fight was there for Froch to take but he tried to showboat and was not busy enough. To me he lost this in rounds 1-3 & 6 which were all rounds he could have had on my card if he had just done a little more.

I don’t see a case for Froch winning and think he would be fortunate to get a draw! I don’t see the controversy over this one. My memory says he did much better the 2nd time, and need to score that one in a couple of weeks when I get done my current list. Go ahead and watch this if you have not seen it, I just don’t find it as exciting as many seem to.
