Reg was a brilliant commentator even though he didn`t know much about boxing fundamentals (which he admitted to Don Cuury when worked as co-commentator alongside Reg for the Hagler-Mugabi fight) but which fights contained his best commentary work? I loved his commentary on the Hagler v Hearns classic war.

Reg boxed as an amateur, his Father and Uncle were well known, in demand seconds,I think he knew very well what he was watching.I sat next to him several times, he was a charming, self effacing man, and excellent company.

He had a wonderful turn of phrase. I remember him describing Hearns-Leonard 2 as like 'watching Bambi getting mugged'.

    Sonny Liston disagreed!

But yes a credit to the sport.

Great memories from my youth of Reg Gutteridge and Jim Watt commentating. Remember the big fights moving to SKY and gettiing lumbered with Ian Darke and Glenn McCrory

Jim Watt was the MAN in the commentary booth.
Hilariously intense and had great insight of the game.

Yes I watched those eras and I watched Reg have his last hurrah with Watt on ''Judgement night'' 1996, he had to cover Tyson v Holy because Darke was covering the British card on that night, brilliant night of boxing.

I'll take world champion Jim Watts insights over your film studies Mark, even if I disagree with them.

I remember seeing an interview with Ali many years ago i think that was Reg doing it. He asked Ali " Do you think your tough. tougher even than me? Ali laughed. guy said " ok Ali do this" he took out a pen knife reached down and stuck it in his leg. Ali's face was a picture he said " Man youre crazy no way" guy rolled up his pant leg he had a prosthetic leg. Ali said " Man you got me you can say youre the only man to beat Ali " one of many boxing memories

That story was about Liston originally, but trust Reg to spin a good yarn, to liven up an interview.

    Exactly.
Supposedly after Reg stuck the knife in his fake leg Liston said “You are one crazy motherfu**er but can you do this” and proceeded to punch a door of its hinges!!!
