Lennox Lewis ain't been the heavyweight champ in 16 years ... but the boxing legend tells TMZ Sports he could step into a ring right now and beat up some the best fighters in the world.

We were talking to the 3x heavyweight champion and boxing Hall of Famer about Deontay Wilder (Lewis' calling DW's fight vs. Luis Ortiz Saturday night) ... when the British star hit us with a doozy, saying his 54-year-old body could STILL whoop-ass in the ring.

right now, I'd give a lot of guys a run for their money right now," Lewis says.

"I've still got that heavyweight focus, heavyweight mind. I dissect fights. I know what is needed of the other person to be successful, so I know what I'd have to do to be successful against these guys."

Lennox -- whose last bout was a win against Vitali Klitschko in June 2003 -- knows fighting current day heavyweight stars wouldn't be a cakewalk.

"It wouldn't be easy. I'll tell you that right now. These guys are bigger, stronger, but as far as boxing talent, they're still learning. even for me, when I retired, I was still learning. You never stop learning as a champion."

We also asked ... how would prime Lennox Lewis fight current day Deontay Wilder? (They've got 72 KO's combined — so both guys have crazyyy power.)

"Make sure I don't get hit and hit him before he hits me," Lennox tells us.

"We knock out people. So, anytime we launch our right hands, it ain't coming back. So, if we hit each other at the same time we both go.

A your comment please on what said by Lennox.

He forgot to add his disclaimer, and I'll do it for 50 million dollars! Clearly Lewis is slipping with age.

His Wilder tactics are exactly what I would expect, don't get caught and take him out fast.

"It was a flash knockdown". Lennox's first words when he wakes up in the hospital.

Lewis at 54 is only a year away from Wilder's next mandatory.

Lewis is pretty spry for 54, so the limit has been increased!
He must be either 60 or his current age at 300+ pounds!
Wilder better be careful though, he could get hit by another check jab!

Hes right he would not have the size he once had over 99% of the guys he fought and he relied on that A LOT they are more difficult to deal with ,I don't think ppl actually understand that unless they fought themselves. fighters of 6'4 plus are really polished compared to what they used to be . Lewis height is the average today and he didn't have that many guys his size ,that's why he looked better with shorter guys ,now those roles are reversed ,if one isn't used to shorter guys it could backfire like Aj fight but that's not going to happen often .

I wouldn't put it past him to be able to take Wilder out bc he would be to smart vs a one weapon fighter . He'll have trouble with guys like DDD and Hrgovic coming up and I don't think he would last long with AJ. The shorter guys he handles like Ruiz / Kownacki types bc that's what he always did best is control shorter guys even if they were difficult like Mercer, Holyfield and Tua.

Ortiz would be a match I wouldn't mind seeing if he loses tonight ,why not lets see if Lewis still got it if hes making claims,do a charity fight with another guy beyond his prime for the senior citizens who are homeless ? :ggg

He ran away from an offered and ordered rematch in 2003. Vitali will take his call.

Lewis can see that Wilder has no technique and Fury is a fraud, who beat old and slow Wlad, and he thinks he can beat these guys, but he is too old
