Ortiz was easily winning rounds without going into hard exchanges. During the knockout wilder hold his left hand on ortiz's face to close his vision, but Ortiz insisted on going forward to pressurize wilder. That was a careless, stupid action. Perhaps wilder was passive all fight just to bait ortiz and it worked. It could have been a totally different result.
Sure. In a Haymon fight. The opponent is down 3 rounds at the opening bell. As for the fight, Ortiz does not have the footwork to stay out of range very long. Once that distance and motion slows down to a crawl for the old guy, his defense is not good enough for the incoming punches. By the time Ortiz starts looking for a second wind, he is border line ready to get tagged and go. What a horrible connect % by two heavies. Let alone a championship bout where the champ had 9 successful defense. These 2 made Ruddock look accurate
To me Wilder was down by at least 4 points at the time of the stoppage (won a max of 1 round and even that one of was debatable). This fight further exposed his lack of fundamentals as I have been saying all along on this forum.
Wilder is a total freak .. the man only fights to win by KO .. his style is bizarre and his overall skills limited as far as polish go but he is extremely focused, well conditioned, mean as hell, super confident, has exceptional physical advantages and keeps his power every minute of every round .. I don't think any heavyweight had this sort of one punch KO power laying out huge guys like this .. he's like a drone.
The way the fight went, up until the KO, illustrated once again that Wilder is just a tall, athletic guy with a devastating right hand.
I believe I had him down 58-56, but 59-55 is realistic as well. I gave him 2-3 and Ortiz 1-4-5-6. But this was dreadful outside of the KO punch.
I thought Ortiz got over confident. He’d just about won every round, but the 7th was actually his best round, he got complacent.
But he is much more .. that is no usual right hand and he keeps power all night in it .. it is also extremely fast off a 83" reach .. he's for real for what he is ...
Wilder does demonstrate extraordinary power but, to be fair, he was perfectly positioned and ready to fire off that right hand and I've no doubt Ortiz is still kicking himself for having hovered too long in one spot, which gave Wilder both the time and the opening to have done so. Up until that point, even a relative plodder like Ortiz was able to consistently offset and wrong-foot Wilder.
I think they're pretty different beyond being athletic with big power and **** skills. Baer was much more aggressive, whereas Wilder mostly relies on opponents making mistakes.
I think the fight basically emphasised what we already knew. He possesses insane power in the right hand but very little else. His output is minimal, for a 6’7” fighter with an 83” reach, he barely uses the jab. How many rounds has he actually won in the 2 Ortiz fights and the Fury fight? I suppose it doesn’t matter, but you would think sooner or later he’ll come unstuck. He has though brought genuine excitement back to the heavyweight division, you’re simply waiting on the edge of your seat for the explosion to happen!
