Fully Obel was gifted two shots at Hagler on no merit whatsoever except his connections (or his manager’s).

Fought for what title? I take it you’re talking the European? Well yes against an array of mediocrities.
Those fighters you mentioned who never fought for the title, they fought other contenders, Papp didn’t.
I don’t see why you can’t see that.

    You changed the settings.
I said top contenders either have good losing efforts fighting for the world title or fighting other contenders.
You then say Papp won and fought for the European Title! Not the same criteria is it?
Then mention “contenders” in the form of Christensen, Fullmedo and Jones, who fought Papp in his last fight.
I think I’m on solid ground here, Papp simply wasn’t one of the 10 top Middleweight contenders in history.

Well I won't debate what politics got him the title shot, but Obeljeimas was 28-0 before he fought Hagler, after he lost to Hagler he won 8 straight fights against decent competition too get another shot at Hagler. Fuc Obel looked like a well schooled fighter, he had a fast jab, good power, was technically sound. He looked better skilled than 60% of the fighters that hold World titles today. I wouldn't have been shocked if he had won a version of a Middleweight belt if there was no Hagler

Why do you think it is nobody agrees with you?
FYI Christenson was a welter/super welter he had 79fights and for 70 of them he was inside the welter/light middleweight limits.
For the 1st Papp fight he was conceding 8lbs! For the 2nd 6lbs.
He won the Euro Middle weight title on a dubious DSQ,and held it total of 3 months.
Here is the report of the fight.

"Confusion was total in Copenhagen when the Scot John McCormack, European middleweight champion was disqualified in the 4th round against Danish contender Christian Christensen.

McCormack was probably ahead on points when he decked the Dane with a short right to the jaw in the 4th.

Going through different sources, this seems to be what happened: 1) Referee Rudolf Durst started a count. 2) Christensen got up at 3. 3) The referee contiuned the count, creating confusion since the 8 count didn't apply to title fights. 4) Christensen looked unable to defend himself, but to some it looked as if the referee didn't see Christensen's condition since he was looking across the ring at the timekeeper. 5) As the count reached around 5, McCormack rushed to the Dane and knocked him through the ropes with a left hook. 6) Some heard the referee still counting while this happened. 7) Christensen was dragged to his corner while McCormack danced with joy.

All hell broke lose, programs, bottles and even money rained in the ring. One spectator managed to enter the ring and took a swing at McCormack who was protected by his cornermen and manager Al Phillips. When the disqualification of McCormack was announced the crowd calmed down, McCormack entered the ring again and hung the laurel wreath around the dazed Christensens neck. "

Another thing, he couldn't punch his way out of a papar bag!

You talk about moving the goal posts, you do it every post to suit your agenda.
So now winning the European title and defending for the most part against in a world sense unrated contenders qualifies him as an all time top ten middleweight contender.
Oh and by the way I don’t think Murray, Eastman and Miranda should be in there either but they’re all more qualified than Papp.

To bring it back to the thread, the only question is do you think Papp is one of the 10 greatest middleweights never to win the world title?
