Think that’s a fair comment. He’s a good fighter and enjoyable to watch but he’s got no notable wins under his belt. He failed his acid test at super welterweight against Smith, I think he needs another one at middleweight before contemplating jumping in with Andrade.
The Smith loss was a very strange fight. Maybe he has ssome problems we don't know about. Williams wasn't right that night at all. He is better than Smith. He looks very good since then at 160, but he isn't s big middleweight. Very good fighter though.
I assume it was weight problems. After Smith 2 he went on to fight Sharp at super welter but then his next fight was at light heavy vs Craig Nicholson! So he was clearly struggling to make the weight, he does now look better at middleweight and this Alanta Fox fight will be a solid test for him.
He’s not as good as Smith at 154, Smith is so tough and underrated. He dragged Williams into a war and William’s couldn’t live with it.
Yeah don't know how anyone can say he's better than Smith, He's lost too him twice. First fight left a bit of a sour taste but 2nd time around Beefy won - and won well with not much drama. Williams has come back well - absolutely destroyed Heffron in what should have been a close fight - but he really exposed Mark's weaknesses to movement and his lack of balance. A couple of more routine wins afterwards - now he needs a big fight that's gunna add some value to his ranking and his career
Just because he lost to Smith at a lower weight doesn't mean he won't go on to be a better fighter. People forget the headbutt from the first fight also. Since moving up a weight class and going to Ingle gym he's been terrific. I think this is a case where moving up in weight has done a fighter the world of good. We will find out truely how good he is in his next two fights (hopefully).
Well it means he's not a better light Middle than Smith let's be honest. Time will tell if he goes on to have an overall better career/ become a better fighter.
I'm pretty sure there was something wrong with Williams in that fight 20. Smith is very tough alright. But I rate Williams as better.
Bloody hell, has there ever been a group of boxers as overrated as the Smith's?! Smith-overrating syndrome! It's terminal and incurable! I give up!
I think Williams was too young and inexperienced when he faced Smith. I think he’s a much improved fighter since then though and as found his true weight at 160.
Williams corner pulled him with a cut caused by a head-butt. All 3 judges had Williams ahead. Smith didn't make 154 for that fight.
True, but the momentum was swinging the other way, Williams looked like he’d emptied the tank and Smith was coming on strong. Both had terrible cuts but where Smith seemed galvanised by it, Williams corner decided not to carry on. It was a naughty headbutt, but that second fight was pretty conclusive imo.
Liam Smith is/was just a tough mulloker nothing more . Williams has got skills, ( and he is pretty tough too. ). Given a bit of luck, of which he hasn't had much do far, Williams has a much higher ceiling. You're an incorrigible smithophile, 20. Only recently you were regaling us with tales of Callums brilliant inside game, his lighting-like speed and distance control etc . Then he met Ryder.... The Smith's have been incredibly lucky (albeit tough) overachieving so-and-so's to have done so well out of boxing, given their ability.
