Well now hang on a second. Im not an Ortiz hater. I wanted him to win. Both times. Ive actually been on record numerous times on this forum as a Wilder hater if anything. Stiverne was folded his 2nd fight vs Wilder. Origami folded. To me it erases his 12 round distance the 1st time. And also, I dont give Breazeale credit for having a good chin cause he was literally laid TF out by Wilder his last fight. No props to him for that.
You can't just pick and choose when someone has a good chin, he was able to take some big hits from good hitting heavyweights. That result says more about Wilders power than chin
Stiverne has a solid chin, he was beaten up by a relentless Joyce and didn't fold. Wilder flattened him. Wilders power is serious. Probably Stiverne and duhaupas best chins he's fought.
I don't like Wilder at all. But at a certain point you have to admit the power is exceptional. I'm not even convinced it's completely natural. But whatever the case, it's on display at this stage. There's too much evidence for it. Yes, he fought lower level opposition for a while, (though that doesn't mean they don't have chins). But now he's iced guys like Stiverne/Breaz that have taken shots from heavy handed fighters. He put Fury over and though people think Fury has no chin, he took a couple of big flush RH's from Wlad and some hooks. Fury has also tasted power from Price, so he's a pretty good judge. There are other sparring accounts from Haye confirming the power and Wilder just KO'd Ortiz to the forehead.
So if Wilder theoretically laid Parker out in one round that'd mean Parker retroactively had no chin? When does someone start getting props from you then?
Wasnt he? Didnt he literally take that fight on less than a days notice. We're talking "rushing him to the arena so he'd be there on time" late.
Alot of Wilders power comes from his technique. He hits hard for sure, but look how he throws compared to Klitschko or Joshua. He throws hopping in with full body swings with both hands in motion like a paddle one pushes forward one pulls backwards. Of course this is optimized for power. Its like he throws at a punch machine aiming for the record. But to what cost? Why Joshua or Wlad doesnt punch like that? Because of risk getting countered. So then how can Wilder get away with it? Here is when the opposition comes in. Wilder is fast tall and rangy. For his technique to work for him getting away with it his opposition must be either: small or: slow. See a pattern here? Could he punch like that against Wlad or Joshua and getting away with it? I dont think so. What would he do to adjust? Giving up the power technique. How hard would he punch then? I think for straight textbook crosses he wouldt be ahead of Wlad or Joshua due to their weight advantage even if his body structure is more dense pound for pound comparing the three of them. There is still 25 pounds evening out such advantage. For bad comp why not continue with the technique? But sooner or later he has to fight somebody tall and fast able to counter his overloading technique and when that happens he either has to adjust or simply getting KTFO.
You raise a really good point that is often overlooked on this forum. The best guys do not get hit flush very often. They are making subtle movements to avoid, deflect or roll with the punch. Too many think it's about standing there and wailing away at each other chin like rocker sockem robots. Yes there are differences in peoples abilities to withstand head trauma but it is also a lot about minimizing the amount of head trauma a fighter must absorb. There are very few to zero elite fighters I can think of that lead with their face. Guys that do that tend to have short careers. People also sometimes dont take into account where you get hit matters. A fighter can be taking shots and taking shots but then go down from a single punch from a supposedly lesser puncher. Sometimes it's because its exactlly where you get hit. Not every spot on your body is equal in its ability to take punishment. The classic liver shot being a good example.
Iron chinned: 0 Sturdy chinned: 2 (Duhaupas and Stiverne) It's difficult to gage Ortiz's chin as his only trouble has come from Wilder. If Ortiz continues to fight and no one else is able to dead him how Wilder has, I'd retroactively say his chin is sturdy as well.
Hughie Fury is a perfect example of this. Always riding with the shots minimizing the snap of punches making them more like pushes.
Oh there are definitely a few... Chisora being one of them. Parker...Wach Wach took some crazy punishment from Bakole... jesus.... didn't go down once.
