Yes he was prime at 38, he aged like fine wine. This is common knowledge. Certain fighters just bloom late, like Hopkins and Fitzsimmons.

The 1920 census proved that Moore was 38 coming into the Marciano fight

Louis said in an article that he believed that Himself, Walcott, Schmeling and Marciano would beat Ali. He even went out of his way to say "especially Marciano".

I can't find the article but I will find it later

I think that I am right in saying that Stiverne was ranked the first time he fought Wilder in 2015, but not the second time in 2017.

    Ortiz was ranked both times.

I think that the decision in the Fury fight was so unwarranted that it should be dismissed, and Ring Magazine obviously agrees with me!

Either way, this is a very very weak resume for a fighter being discussed on the classic forum!

Marciano had one hell of a chin but could he take one of Wilder's right hands solid? I'm not so sure. A match-up between these two would be a really bizarre contrast in size, shape and styles. You'd have to allow some kind of handicap to make it fairer, I guess allow Marciano to wear his era of gloves and Wilder his. Marciano might also need a step-ladder.

You people discuss Corbett like he's some sort of miracle worker.

You discuss Baer like the prototype for some sort of monster.

Did Jack Johnson ever beat a prime, full sized heavy? Or do we count a 154 pound Langford as an ATG heavy?

And I hear a rumor that Wilder's career is not over, that he is not a complete work yet. Just a rumor, mind you.

At least they beat the top man of their era at some point.
He beat the top contenders of his era, and indeed he beat plenty of big heavies.
Two or three key fights could change the picture significantly, but at time of writing, we can't back him very strongly based on his resume!

Walcott wasn't prime. He had an amazing, uncommon type of career. He was still dangerous, he was fighting better than most older guys do. IMO Walcott one last great fight in him in Philadelphia. After that I don't believe he threw the 2nd fight (I hope not) but he didn't have the taste for another brutal fight. He was halfway out the door.
His time was up. He was an amazing person to overcome what he overcame.

This is an extra-era discussion not an intra-era discussion. This context seems to continually elude you.

Until the required apostasy you will be forever lost in this discussion.

Funny how Ali and Louis have nothing but praise for Marciano and his skill set yet a bunch of people on the internet cant grasp he was actually a great fighter and would embarrass some of these clowns they match him against. I wouldn’t waste my time matching Ali against the likes of second and third raters yet it’s a commonality on this site. Until Wilder beats some competition it’s ridiculous to even compare the two imo

Pretty much. I find the opinion that Ali is "too much man" and "would dismantle Marciano" to be completely laughable

It's a resume of a contender, not a champion. Stiverne didn't deserve his rank at all in hindsight, Ortiz did for the first fight, but he was old by the time he meet Wilder. If Wilder losses to Fury " officially " or gets knocked out by a medium level puncher, polls like this will be less common and less debated,

Wilder is perhaps the most hyped fighter relative to his ability in recent memory.

I do recall reading a quote from Joe Louis saying Rocky would have been hell for him even in his prime.

Some on here are missing the point...

It is not just Wilder that is the issue, it is every single heavyweight that ever lived.

No matter who is matched against Rocky in some fantasy fight, be it Louis, Tyson, Holmes, Foreman, Lewis etc, there are those few who just cannot bring themselves to side with any of them, to admit Marciano could be beaten.

That is not realism, it is hero worship.

If Marciano had been a Norwegian Mormon I seriously doubt this cult would exist.

Strange that he himself didn't think so."finally, you understand, when he got me in a position where he could hit me ,then it wasn't long beforeI had to crumple up,because I had no legs.Probably I hadn't any legs for the past 4 or 5 years"Archie Moore1970 recorded interview which states Moore was born on December the 13th 1913.Which makes him 2 months shy of 42 when he fought Marciano!
Aged like fine wine? He was ko'd inside 5 rounds by Patterson a year later ,I guess he must have been corked by then!

So a guy who would have had issues with every single heavyweight who ever lived:

Was the only undefeated lineal hw champion in the the history of the sport.

Broke various records for consistency of wins, and quality of title defenses, which stand to this day.

Had the highest KO% of any lineal heavyweight champion.

    You seriously believe that!!!

With all due respect, it sounds like you are the cultist!
