"I may be less than 17 stone," Joshua told BBC Sport. “I'm punching loose and heavy - rhythm and flow," the 30-year-old added. "Before I was trying to bench-press a house. I used my body to get where I needed but then I started realising the sweet science of the sport. I am punching like a horse kicking backwards right now." Interesting that he may be coming in so light for the rematch. McCracken touched on the fact they had trained much differently for the June date when originally looking to match Miller for strength.
If he comes in at 16 stone odd I will be stunned, credit to him though if he does. It will do him the world of good with his speed & stamina. The body builder look made him stiff and only able to work in bursts.
AJ has lost so much weight! have you seen him at the press conference... Im a bit worried now... is he gonna be hitting as hard at this weight??? The guy has shrunk so bloody much... looks like a teenager I think he might be around 235, maybe even a bit less
The weight loss will do wonders alright for speed and more importantly stamina. If you look at the first fight the man was just exhausted. He couldn't handle the heat Ruiz brought. However, he may lose a little bit of power which isn't good fighting a man with a chin like Ruiz and his punch resistence may also suffer. I'm convinced AJ will box and move with a lot of success, looking good and tying Ruiz up on the inside. However, can AJ avoid the educated pressure for 12 rounds? Unlikely. And if Ruiz clips him, he can end it there and then. What AJ weighs and how he approaches the fight is so intriguing.
Looks thin. I still dont think he has stamina issues....its more chin issues. When he gets hurt...his stamina shuts down on him....until hes hurt tho he can go at a decent pace for 12 rounds. Doesnt matter what weight he is imo....his stamina will abandon him if he does get hurt. Hes very much like bruno in that respect.....the only difference being joshua looks more mentally sharp when hurt...even franks mind shut down on him when hurt as well as everything else. Although joshuas mind did go a bit against ruiz. Hes still capable of fighting back to an extent. Might help him be more elusive tho....although ruiz is pretty decent at cutting off the ring. Dont think anyones really avoided ruiz. I still think joshua needs to hurt him at mid range. Nullify short range....score points long range and hurt him mid range....coming in. Push him back...otherwise its a hatd nights work if you dont discourage ruiz coming forward imo.
No expert but punch power doesn’t come from huge muscles so him slimming down shouldn’t affect it, it might even improve it if he’s a wee bit quicker. Punch power won’t do him any good anyway, if he want to win he can’t engage with Ruiz and needs to box at range, if he will or can is a different matter
Let’s see what happens when Ruiz, cracks that chin with a 4 punch combination. He’s going to get hurt and panic. Trying to turn AJ into to this sleek boxer. AJ has never been that in his boxing career. When he gets hit he will revert back to what he is. He’s going to start trading and get clipped. AJ is what he is, and trying to box with a fighter who has more skills isn’t winning him the title back. I imagine fast Eddie is doing all he can with the judges and the referee. Oh, and just never mind AJ’s drug test.
A lot of people going for the AJ stoppage but that'll be a serious job because Ruiz's chin is fantastic. I only watched the first fight again two days ago and AJ will do well to catch him again with a punch as sweet as that left hook. It was perfect, on the button, on the inside with all his weight into it. Yet Ruiz got up strong and fought back. That looks to me like a man who may never be stopped in his career. Big fear for me here is a controversial decision for AJ. It's not been discussed much but if the fight goes 12, it's likely.
Said chin issues but pretty much meant he had issues with recovery from being hurt. Takes him too long to recover.
I agree with this. Joshua can come in looking like Superman, Eddie Hearn could have the judges in his pocket and it will count for nothing if his mind freezes when Ruiz hits him. As Mike Tyson once said, "Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth."
With the weight thing wouldn’t it be more about it being a bad thing because it might not be his natural weight or what he is used to? Kind of like how Bowe drained himself for the Golota rematch because he was so desperate to get that win, the weight loss was ineffective. Of course AJ is not shot to pieces like that but it concerns me in the sense he has to get used to punishment at that lighter weight, with the bigger Ruiz coming at him. Depends how much he has lost I guess, we will see at weigh in. I thought he looked trim and sharp in the public workout, then at other times he looks unnaturally smaller.
If he can get dropped like that, he can get stopped.. never say never. AJ can and will KO Ruiz. Ruiz has a good chin, lets not over exaggerate and say perfect.... granite chins can be cracked... like Chisora
AJ can change physically, but the cracks appear to have been there mentally ever since he was dropped by Klitschko. That seemingly triggered something in him, and i think the way he lost, in his big showcase in America, could've mentally finished him. He still doesn't seem all there, he's talking in cliches more than ever
