He's only had one fight as a heavyweight...

As he held the WBO title at Cruiserweight, WBO allows their champions to relinquish their titles to become mandatory in the division above. Terrence Crawford did the same moving from Jr Welterweight to Welterweight

Thanks. It seems a bizarre ruling, especially in the move from Cruiserweight to Heavyweight when there is no limit to how heavy an opponent can be.

I wondered at the time why Eubank and Watson fought for the WBO Super Middleweight when neither had fought in that division before.

    It isn't a ruling I agree with.

Normally, I'd agree with you. Take Saunders for example. Defended his MW title extremely sporadically, against generally sub par opposition, but was granted an immediate shot at the vacant 168 belt against another less than stellar opponent.

But in Usyk's and Crawford's case, they were undisputed in their division. I think that earns the fighter extra purchase.

Consider this: Dennis Hogan was coming off zero fights at middleweight in several years when he got instated as Charlie's mandatory ahead of their mismatch last weekend.

Sometimes it be like that, for whatever various boxing-politics reason.

But the fact they are undisputed has no effect on the WBO's ruling. They would have him as the mandatory contender anyway.

And I still don't think that any undisputed champion should automatically become the mandatory challenger in the division above after relinquishing his titles.

    Is it really unfair?

Usyk cleaning up an entire division, and one of the best in the sport sort of trump's anything anyone has done at HW.

Usyk is 1 of my 2 favourite active fighters, but I have to admit that him becoming a titlist by beating Witherspoon and Chisora(assuming things go down that way) isn’t fair. But that’s not on him, It’s on WBO. Terence Crawford(my other favourite active fighter), Saunders and Tim Bradley in the past all benefited from it.

Fair play for cleaning up a division, but isnt that reward enough? Maybe give him a big trophy as well?

But putting him ahead of the queue in another division where some fighters may have worked hard to earn a spot in the rankings, or maneuvered themselves there get hard done by

So by all means weldone on Usyks achievement, but then it interferes with the achievement of other people in a separate race.

I don't really hate that ruling to be honest, because it creates fights with names attached to it and lets be honest, if you were a champion in a category you're already supposed to be up there, know what I mean ? If it wasn't the case, Usyk would have to make his way through the rankings for anyone to actually fight him and he's high risk low reward for anyone at Heavyweight. I don't see anyone wanting to lose their chance to fight Wilder or Joshua.

Look at the WBC, they put anyone in the mandatory position for no reason at all. And a guy like Whyte (who I don't even like ffs) never got his chance against Wilder. He was replaced as the mandatory by Tyson Fury for this year, and the WBC claims that the next mandatory will then be in frebruary 2021 !!!
