Are you talking about 78 when Benitez struggled twice with Bruce Curry immediately before the Shields fight?
Yes! And once more, learn your history; he struggled 1 time. Second time he won going away. And, once again, 78 Curry was a lot better than anyone Floyd beat at 140.
Weston was a first class boxer. Matter of fact Eddie Gregory aka Mustafa Muhammad said in an old KO mag interview that Weston was one of the guys he used to study in the gym. Extremely talented boxer who only lacked heavy fire power
That's an interesting statement since Curry twaddled his career away post 78, taking L after L, until pulling together a decent 82 and 83. Surely Corley who was coming off a win over Bailey and SD loss to Judah, or even Gatti who had just ko'd Dorin and Leija (read:juiced) would like a word with you. Benitez has a career filled with inconsistencies because he was worse than Mayweather. He doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt just because he rode Leonard and Duran's pixie dust.
I see Wilfred Benitez in his prime outpointing Floyd Mayweather Jr, in his prime at 147 lbs. El Radar would fight very cautiously, countering Floyd's flurries, with his own. It should be noted that Benitez had good body and head movement. A very close bout, as both are very talented.
I agree. That era was so packed and those guys so hungry. A top elite guy then is different than an elite guy now.
El Radar inconsistency was because of weight problems at 140 and focused El Radar only beaten by the best. El Radar pts.
Mayweather would have had inconsistent results in that era, as well. The talent pool was much higher. And, although Mayweather is a great fighter, he is no ATG at 147.
Mayweather is an ATG at 147 and accomplished much more there than Benitez. Benitez had inconsistent results against guys who were worse than a lot of Mayweather's opponents.
