Harold Johnson vs Jerry Quarry

This is one of those fights that’s to close to call for me. Would probably be a split decision for the winner

 

Harold Johnson like Archie Moore for some odd reason is completely discounted as a HW. When his record at HW is rather impressive. Like top 25-35 impressive. Weird how people don’t discount Charles, Spinx, or jamesT, but wave off Archie Johnson and Maxim as nobodies in the HW division. They were amazing LHWs and HWs.

 

I was gonna say Johnson by decision but then reading some other posts have swayed me to call it a toss up.

 

Seems to be an obsession with Marciano. Can’t even praise his opponents lol but Johnson was a better then good HW

Harold Johnson, a very good light heavyweight champion in his own right, but I believe that he could not defeat the counter punching former Grey Hound bus mechanic in Jerry Quarry, from Bellflower, California. Johnson is no George Chuvalo, who kayoed Quarry, in Dec 1969. Jerry decisions Harold by a very close decision. Jerry's counter punching is the big difference in this one. The match would pretty much look like Quarry's match against Thad Spencer, on Feb 3 1968, except that Jerry does not kayo Harold as he did Thad.

 

Johnson was very skilled and beat bigger men than Quarry like 6'3 Nino Valdes - Johnson was 5'10 Quarry 6' but not an easy fight for either man - Quarry like those Big muscled guys with power, like Mac Foster- Ron Lyle- Shavers-etc. who he beat decisively but movement and skill troubled him- hard pick -leaning with Quarry but but but

 

Okay , who said a mismatch, When Quarry lost to Machen was that his best? If your gonna go by matchups , Do not you go by their best? Jerry beat 9 ranked heavyweights and knocked out 5, (2) we're ranked No. 1 at the time. Few Champions in any division even fight 9 ranked fighter's their whole entire career.

 

true but he was also a very good boxer, mover and tactician - I favor Quarry but may be close - Quarry could end a fight with one shot but Johnson survived a few punchers

 

I have to go with Quarry,, but it sure won't be easy

 

They had a who's who of the heavyweights 1956-77 31 fighter's Quarry was number # 8 . and fourth with top ten victories (Ali, Patterson, Frazier), this list included Liston & Foreman!
