I use to run but my legs and knees can't take it maybe because i'm not in my 20's anymore i am 36 years young taking it's toll.Any suggestion or alternative to running. I am thinking of getting a rowing machine or bike but cost money. What i like about running it's free.
A rowing machine is not an alternative to running. To buy a bike is a good idea. You don't need a fancy one if money is a concern. Swimming is an excellent alternative as well.
As the person above suggested, swimming would be a great alternative. Very low impact on the joints and you get a bull body workout depending on how intense you go. I don't think 36 years is that old, what do you think caused your knees to give out? Bad form? Not resting enough? Could use some pointers or tips on how to save my knees before its too late.
I agree with the above about looking at your knee issues. I’d consider myself more of a recreational runner than a boxer and in my experience I’d say it’s a very popular hobby amongst guys in their 40’s and 50’s. If there is no alternative then the Klitschko’s did pretty well with swimming instead of running from what I hear. I’m not sure what he does but Wilder also doesn’t run.
Running on cement, or asphalt is bad for you because of the micro fractures. I used calcium when my knees started clicking, and it stopped in 20 Mins. If at all possible do your running on the grass. The cushioning allows time for healing, and it prevents further injuries. Watch out for dips, and holes in the ground. I also use MSM to make the healing go a little faster. (I gave MSM instructions in another post so if you are into faster healing look it up.) In my younger days I ran track, broke records, and won a few metals: just not Olympic metals. So, micro fractures are real, and it can take years before they start causing problems. If you can run on a soft race track, or some nice soft grass parks: do it! It is much better for your whole body!
Watch this guys channel. Your problems may be coming from your running form or shoes. Following his advice stopped my achilles pains after I healed up, now I have no trouble with them. Something to consider. https://m.youtube.com/user/Vo2maxProductions
Swimming and Rowing are the best alternatives if your goal is being fit, and losing fat. Low impact, high intensity... can't get any better, may climbing stairs is good too. I never recommend cardio running, I know countless runners that have a myriad of injuries and chronic pain.. I never run. I get my cardio out of squats/rowing/boxing/kickboxing. Maybe try glucosamine supplements for joints, and always do a dynamic warm up for your body to get your joints lubricated/warm/ready
When my joints started creaking from running, I tried cycling/swimming etc but it just didn't feel the same. (I'm 41 now , 6ft 8 and 15 stone 7 so its quite heavy running in comparison to other distance runners) I cut down my runs to 5k , 5 times a week and changed my route to more inclines starting with the first 2.5k uphill. Doing less distance but more times a week along with a harder route has worked for the aches and pains for me.
I am 50 mate ! and still run 4 to 6 miles 3 to five times a week but whats more I have been doing this since I was 12 and I am alright ! I am no Bernard Hopkins but as I said I am alright and I always see people I consider to be a lot fitter than me struggle I am a bit of a fat bast%%d too If I was being honest with myself
It's well worth the money to invest in decent shoes. Replace them when the tread is worn. I lot of scientific research goes into the high end running shoes. Try a few different styles and find one that fits and feels light on your feet. I use an all terrain shoe which is not the lightest but has extra protection for cross country.
Really good point pow this has been one of my most important factors At the moment I am training in the Sauconony Omni 16 but I have use the Omni 12 ,12,14,15 They have a new version out now the OMNI ios 2 so I might get a pair this week I never do more than 400 miles in a shoe (a bit like some of my cars !) The shoe is knackard after 400miles no matter what weight you are Please note When I say the shoe ! I mean two shoes I dont just buy one Always buy a left and right one at the same time Just in case someone mis understands
This is also a good point. I purchase them new asics 360 knit BS. And it was horrible to run in lol. I still have em but thinking for giving it away to salvation army. Waste of 250 bucks. It's a POS! Never buy into ads or how good they look on paper and online reviews probably paid to say how good they are.
