Frank Hyde, “Marciano a Harder Puncher Than Louis: That’s Walcott’s Opinion and He was Chilled by Both Ex-Heavy Champs,” The Record, Jan. 18, 1957

The man who fought them both twice says Rocky Marciano was a harder puncher than Joe Louis.

    Joe Had More Polish

“I should add, though,” said Jersey Joe Walcott “that they were two different types of punchers, Marciano could knock you kicking with one punch but he had to get his shot –get you set up right if you see what I mean. Louis was more dangerous with either hand. He’d set you up with one type of punch and chill you with another. Louis had more polish and could flurry better. But, speaking strictly of hard punching, once Rocky got you where he wanted you, good night!”

Just trying to do a public service. I usually don't put much stock in boxing quotes--especially the ones concerning who one fighter thinks hits harder than another—but enough other people around here seem to. So here we are.

I've always thought a prime Joe Louis would have busted Rocky up.

The facsimile of him that Rocky faced did a pretty good job!

Did a Rocky vs Louis thread not too long ago and some think Rocky would have stopped prime Louis due to styles.

Rocky was a rhythm breaker and hard to time- he threw punches from all angles and positions - Both men could knock you numb with one punch but many time with combinations.

Marciano may have hit harder with one punch- Dempsey was up there as well-

Louis is my number 1 heavyweight puncher of all time but accuracy -killer instinct - stamina all came into play- but he always had trouble with pressure fighters, he said himself but Louis still my #1

While Rocky's defense wasn't as bad as some think , I still see Walcott and Archie Moore dropping Marciano in their fights. Now watch Louis hit Max Baer with 3 straight left hooks and drop him, it's chilling. I could see Joe's combinations dropping Rocky 3 or 4 times before it's stopped. Marciano is the epitome of guts , conditioning and determination that todays fighters need. But Joe is simply a level above him,,,,in my opinion.
