Anyone watch it? Kelly went the 10 round distance with late notice opponent Wiston Campos (stopped by Josh Taylor early last year in 3) which should now set up the Avanesyan clash (I’m even grimacing whilst I’m writing this). Josh Kelly is in serious, serious trouble. Liam Smith looked impressive against another late notice but decent opponent Roberto Garcia. The left hooks and body work were particularly impressive. This was at middleweight, I don’t know whether that was because of short notice for opponent or whether it’s Beefy moving up in weight. If so it could set up a mouth watering trilogy vs Liam Williams. The main event - I’m lost for words. Moved to a different state to help Chavez avoid all drug regulations but then he came in massively over weight anyway. The fight itself had Jacobs looking far from his best up at super middleweight with Chavez Jr definitely in the clash and possibly winning before quitting due to a hand injury after 5.
Missed the UK show but caught the US show. Martinez vs Rosales was very good fight and round 2 is contender for round of the year. Eventually Rosales became overwhelmed by Martinez and he took over fight stopping him a very impressive peformance. Jacobs vs Chavez - Chavez was the size of CW and his gloves appeared to be tiny. The fight was decent and competitive until Chavez quit out of no where.
I watched Kelly and Smith fights. Kelly just doesn't throw enough and if he fights Avanesyan next and does not improve drastically he is, as @Scissors says in serious serious trouble. Liam Smith punch variety was outstanding, especially the body shots and the left and right uppercuts. That was a good fight, Garcia is one tough guy. Poor guy will proberly be pissing blood today. Smith was supposedly just at middleweight for this fight as Garcia couldnt get weight off at late notice for LMM.
Interesting interview with booth on ifl he says when asked about the kelly vs avanysan fight next ‘as long as he agrees to the vada testing the fight with Kelly is pretty much on’ I’m guessing they reckon he’s juicing? it will be one whopper of a fight if it happens that’s for sure!
It's no surprise Chavez missed weight, nor is it a surprise he quit. However, it's a big surprise that this fight was competitive and it's not a good sign for Jacobs. At 32 I think it's fair to say his best years are behind him. Some fighters do well in their early 30's but others begin to slide.
Card not worth staying up for so just recorded and will watch midweek - done this for most of the Matchroom Tank Cards during silly hours this year with the exception of the odd fight of interest that I have watched live or first thing Sunday morning without knowing the result.
I haven’t seen the fight yet so can’t comment but from what I’ve read Chavez had success early on perhaps due to his weight advantage. Jacobs has always been a good boxer but he benefited massively at MW from dwarfing his opponents in the ring. Now he’s had a taste of his own medicine and he’s struggled. I think if he lands another big fight against a heavy hitter at 168 he could get KO’d.
Kelly looking very lacklustre, again. I think Avensyan KOs him if they fight next. Good performance from Smith in a battle of the tough guys. Martinez vs Rosales was brilliant, a high intensity war, good stoppage in the end. Hope to see Martinez in some unification fights. Martinez vs Tanaka would be amazing. Chavez jnr just cements his reputation as an unprofessional, lazy, spoilt brat. He doesn't deserve these big fights he gets. The footage of Chavez snr at the time when jnr quit says it all.
Kelly just doesn't throw enough or punch hard enough to go all the way. Chavez did look ok early but he was huge and I wouldn't look at that fight as a one where to judge how Jacobs does at 168lbs
Chavez Snr looked absolutely disgusted at ringside when his boy quit. Enjoyed what was looking like a good fight though and also thought the Martinez bout was really entertaining. Would love to see him batter that cringeworthy lesbian Edwards again...
Decent card actually, I skipped Josh Kelly for obvious reasons but I watched the rest. Smith and martinez fights were really good and chavez jnr quit like a ***** and ran off with his bag of cash.
