They fought around in the same Era and had a few common opponents. But who takes this battle at middleweight? 12 rounds and Richard Steele as ref..
Barkley decision. DeWitt was a bit more skilled but could be dragged into a war, which would benefit Iran.
I can see that happening, maybe even stopping DeWitt, but he did have a good chin, Tommy Hearns bounced a few shots off it.
Surprised that they didn't fight same weight city both liked a scrap.Would of been great a real war could go either way.Anyone know why they never met in the ring?
This is just the type of fight Doug would win. He had a good left hook and decent jab. Barkley was wild and did better against Kalambay and Hearns, yet Doug beat Sims and Barkley did not, early on. Doug did better against Benn in someway. I pick Doug by SD.
I don't know why either. Both from New York right? Barkley beat Hearns and Dewitt did not. I think once Barkley beat Hearns he had different guys to fight. Duran, Nunn, Benn.. although Doug fought Benn.
I remember that year I think 1990 right? Benn knocked him down with a nice counter left. Actually now that I think about it I am more clear, I think it was a day after Olajide vs. Hearns since Hearns was interviewed before the fight and he was there with a little swelling. He had big glasses on.. Sometimes when fights happen I look in the crowd to see who is watching. Emanuel Steward and I think Pat Petronelli were watching the fight and talking to each other. Atlantic City. If I had to guess. April 29, 1990, since I think Hearns vs Olajide was April 28 1990. I could be off a day or two. That was almost 30 years ago.
Yes, I remember the Benn v Barkley fight like it was yesterday. Looked forward to it for ages. I had a feeling Iran was going to blast out Benn in a Hearns type fight but what a round!!
I don't know how else to post this. http://media.gettyimages.com/photos...-session-in-new-picture-id163601944?s=612x612
Doug had the strangest management. They would have him feast on grade C guys and then have him make a quantum leap in opposition for a big bout. And hardly against the optimal opponents. I can see both sides not wanting the bout for the 2 locals.
This fight would have been a natural in 84, 85 when DeWitt and Barkley were on ESPN all the time. I think I remember the matchup being talked about but Barkley dropped a decision to Eddie Hall. After that DeWitt started getting bigger fights and Barkley was out of the picture until the Olajide fight, which he was supposed to lose.
