Jim Jeffries came back to challenge Johnson in1910,he obviously was no longer the man he had been, but outwardly he looked pretty good,no surplus flesh, taut muscles and a six pack stomach, and he had over a year to get down to weight.
If some of today's heavies such as Arreola,Ruiz Jnr,Whyte ,etc came into the ring in that shape would we be deceived into thinking they were "ready to rumble?"

of course, and I don’t necessarily think that we would be deceived in thinking so.

Few heavyweights now look nearly as fit as 1910 Jeffries. Of course looks are often deceiving.

To be fair, few are as fit as Jeffries

Jeffries looked drained and haggard IMO. I'll take Tony Tubbs any day.

Well, we can start with Jack Johnson who was imminently more fit, possessing more strength and endurance.

A case could be made for Tom Sharkey, who despite lacking size or science hung tough with Jim for 45 rounds.

And that is in his own time.... Afterwards, there may have been hundreds, or even thousands, more fit.

No man in boxing today has the endurance of Jeffries and few if any of the top Heavyweights have his strength (tho if I had to bet on 2 I'd say AJ and Rivas).

Johnson was not stronger nor had more endurance than prime 1904 Jeffries

How do we know, that no one today can compare with Jeff when it comes to endurance? Just because he was able to go 20-25 rounds with small cruiserweights 120 years ago, doesn't automatically mean, that he was better trained than all heavyweights today.

When it comes to pure strength, there are probably quite a few 240+ guys today, who are at least as strong.

That comment was so inane and ignorant that I'm considering whether I should take it seriously

The man would do 14 miles for roadwork. The man went 25 in a grueling slugfest with an equally inhumanly strong Tom Sharkey. The man never showed signs of tire in his prime. Jeffries had impeccable stamina. The Heavyweights today suck wind like it's booze in 6 rounds

Just being pedantic, but those long runs are holdovers of the bare knuckle era. For others that may not know, these would also comprise of lots of walking and hiking, alongside running to make the insane mileages. John L Sullivan regularly used them in his training for Kilrain, building massive stamina and heart strength.

Jefferies, for all his Boxing faults IMO, had immense stamina in his pomp and was a fitness fanatic.

How did he prove this in 1904? By going two rounds with Jack Monroe? Where is this great endurance proved? By not being able to handle diminutive ham and egger Tom Sharkey within 25 rounds?

I bet that most of the top ten today are quite a bit stronger than Jeffries ever was.... Different level of athlete today, different (and more level) playing field.

I do so love when Fairy Tales take precedence over fact... Carry on. Entertainment abounds.

Just as an FYI he won that fight, so yes he did handle Sharkey

Not really, training and diet are pretty much the same. Jeffries was a genetic freak
