Jeresy Joe Walcott had masterful footwork. My old coach use to have us watch him and Ezzard Charles all the time. As far as more recent guys at Heavyweight, Uysk is the best in the business.
Jersey Joe Walcott, Larry Holmes, Gene Tunney, in that order Tyson and Dempsey deserve a shout too, wasn't fancy footwork but excellent use of angles and explosive darts and dashes made them very effective
Believe it or not M.Tyson in his prime. His ability to cut off opponents, and explode from unexpected angles was best in Heavyweight history. Also J.Frazier his ability to track fleet footed fighters was legendary, Just ask Ali.
Usyk is good, probably just below Tunney (if you call Tunney a LHW I can easily call Usyk a CW) Charles ain't better than Walcott Walcott had a master of the shuffle, rhythm break and his footwork allowed him to be slick whilst getting full weight into punches and being in the perfect position to counterpunch
Charles, (Ali), Usyk, Holmes, Walcott imo. JJW's footwork is good, very unique, but imo it's definitely not better than the first 4, I was sorta splitting ends between him, Tunney, Byrd and Loughran for #5. As mentioned by Flash and Lach, guys like Tyson, Frazier and Dempsey deserve HM's for their offensive/aggressive footwork. Despite lacking the key aspect of cutting the ring off effectively, Sonny Liston should get a shout imo, great balance and positioning and boxed well going backwards, utilising angles. Another guy who I think should get a mention, but doubt he will is Evander Holyfield. He could box really well when he wanted, he just rarely did. But the aspect about Evander's I like best is his pivots, and how he set his feet for his punches.
I find some of Walcott's footwork to be superfluous and inefficient. The ring is not a dance floor. I like Holmes' footwork quite a bit. And Louis is underrated in this department. For superheavies, Wlad was pretty fleet at his peak.
You could. But then I could point out CW is a ******* division you don't believe in. Instead I'll just give my opinion that Usyk is just better than Tunney. Compare their fights with Louis, Marciano and even each-other. Charles was better at moving, better positioning, shuffles, pivots ect. I know. I've seen the video. But most of Walcott's impressive tricks were either tactics or feints. His footwork (and head-movement for that matter) is overrated due to people mistaking them for the same thing.
