So he wanted $7 million to fight Canelo. Apparently he ended up making $5.5 million vs GGG, which supposedly was close to what GBP offered him. I guessing he was offered around $6 million to fight Canelo, but chose to fight GGG for just slightly less than that since GBP weren't willing to give him $7 million. That had to be the main sticking point, I doubt the not being able to talk about the fight until it was announced or fines for coming over weight was the problem. (which I'm guessing was in regards to a 10-lb rehydration limit since it was a unification fight which the IBF doesn't mandate anymore when titles are on the line) From Derevyanchenko's perspective he probably thought he would have an easier fight vs GGG for close to the same amount of $$ as fighting Canelo, which makes sense from a risk-reward standpoint.

As a comparison, Kovalev earned approximately $12 million vs Canelo, which was for Kovalev's title in a different weight class. I guess that makes sense since Kovalev is a bigger name and is a bigger draw than Derevyanchenko. Frankly I'm impressed that Derevyanchenko had such a large payday vs GGG. Accoridng to Dan Rafael, vs Jacobs, Derevyanchenko only made $462,500, that was his official purse at least. Rafael claims he earned more but certainly less than $ 1 million. That was one of HBO's last cards and it was on regular HBO.

It's kind of amazing when you think about it, that Derevyanchenko made around 10x as much $$ vs GGG than he did vs Jacobs fighting on DAZN vs HBO.

According to Dan Rafael Jacobs made $2.5 million vs Canelo but in addition to that has a guarantee of more than $10 million from DAZN. I wonder if that DAZN $10 million guarantee for Jacobs is per fight or per year.

Yeah, and the points he was complaining about seemed like non issues.

I am happy that Serge got the money he wanted for Golovkin, but it seems rather stupid of him to complain about the millions Canelo´s side was offering. What exactly was his biggest purse prior to that? 560k vs Jacobs?

Oh, and Hearn said that he lost money on the Jacobs-Derevyanchenko fight.
So again, a non-draw complaining about money while asking for ridiculous amounts.

Well, Derevyancehko's purse would have been 5 times smaller than Canelo's one (7 millions to 35), which is 16,67 % of total amount of money, while according to IBF rules he should have gotten 20% as a mandatory challenger. So it's not like Derevyanchenko's team wasn't ready to make concessions.

And mandatory challengers always get much more money than they would have gotten had they been choosen for the voluntary defense. Alex Leapai got $1 million for Klitschko fight which is ridiculous amount of money for him. I doubt Alex ever got more than $50 K in any of his previous fights.

Ridiculous really. Let us announce the fight and there are penalties if you weigh in too heavy.

    My heart bleeds for him

Reports are that he made $5.5 million vs GGG, not Canelo.

    This article :

    https://www.boxingnews24.com/2019/0...-close-to-what-hed-have-gotten-facing-canelo/

claims that his purse for GGG was close to what he would have gotten to face Canelo. So approximating based on that I said I was guessing he was offered somewhere around $6 million to fight Canelo but wanted $7 million. If you have any additional information to add please do.

I'd imagine in boxing there is a level of respect and courtesy between fighters when drawing up contracts. Of course if you don't like the terms, don't sign the contract but it definitely leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

When you're the big name boxer, the A-side, you get to dictate to the other guy. SRL, Mayweather, Alvarez etc. have all done it. They may be assholes for it, but it's a power play.

That shouldn`t be allowed. The terms of the fight need to be equal. Tho the only advantage the A side should have is the money they earn.
But mandatory challenger have fixed 30%.
Yet Canelo offer him 10%. How`s that okay. Canelo fans are ridiculous.
Canelo represent everything that is wrong with boxing.
