Lead footed. His hands are faster than his feetbut dont act like hes a speed demon. Sometimes I wonder if people are watching the same fight. This is their second fight. In this fight Williams was much more tentative and had less success than their first fight. I dont think its accurate at all to suggest he had no fear of Liston in this fight. Count how many clean punches he lands on a guy who was no defensive genius (its easy, you can do it on one hand). In the first fight he had more success early but pay close attention to how quick he falls apart when Liston doesnt capitulate. Saying he shows no fear of Liston is comical in this fight. The guy is a front runner. In the first fight hes bombing away at Liston while Liston isnt doing much but as soon as Liston starts jabbing consistently he caves. In this fight hes much more on the run. Keep in mind the first fight wasnt too long after Listons second fight with Whitehurst. If you Listen to the radio broadcast of that fight youd know that Liston was criticised throughout the broadcast. The announcer acknowledged his power but stopped just short of calling him a hype job and noted that Whitehurst had no fear of Liston and that beyond a jab Liston didnt show much. Remember Whitehurst was smaller than Liston and had won just two of his last 9 fights. But hey, if people want to believe Williams is some kind of dynamo and ignore both their eyes and his record by all means, enjoy fantasy land.

No he is not a speed demon and nobody, least of all me suggested he was. My point is he was NOT SLOW and Eddie Machen endorsed this,
How many punches he lands is irrelevant to the discussion ,what is relevant is the speed of his hands ,and it is my contention that he was NOT SLOW,which is the adjective YOU USED to describe him.I believe my point has been proven.
ps Yes Whitehurst was smaller than Liston ,he was 192 and 190lbs and 6 foot for those fights, pretty respectable stats for a heavyweight in the 50's I would suggest.
Whitehurst had only won 2 of his last 9 fights but another 2 were draws. and those who beat him were Bethea,Moore,Johnson and Liston. One of those 2 wins was over Satterfield too.
Bottom line this thread is about Williams speed or lack of it and the film shows us he was NOT SLOW, end of.

Sorry but I ain't seeing it, Cleveland is showing no hesitation, trying to land at Sonny. Yes he may be missing a few but that's actually saying he's attempting to hit Liston!
No one's saying he's an ATG but I don't see a guy basically not trying to win or show any reluctance to go for it. Fact is, he s up against a very good, hard punching fighter in Sonny and he comes off second best but no shame in his showing here for me.

I’ve never thought Williams was slow regarding his hands, he certainly isn’t on that footage.
I think Liston was mighty impressive on there, especially his punch variety.
It was all there, the heavy jab, left hook to both head and body, and right cross all delivered accurately and controlled, there was nothing wild there.

Hand speed offensively wasn't really an issue with Williams, but his
reactions defensively was, he seemed slow in reacting to what was
    coming back at him.

    Liston is balanced and measured.
Williams sacrifices too much balance and positioning for his offense.

I've asked numerous detractors of his why he was named The Big Cat and have yet to receive any response.

He wasn't slow but he was very wild and reckless with his shots, and didn't seem to respect Liston's power at all (big mistake). He looked about as fast as someone like Wilder today, or maybe Michael Hunter. Not a speed demon, but not slow by any means.
