Frank Fletcher vs Clint Jackson Another Fun Fletcher fight! Not sure if Clint was overwhelmed early or strategically biding time? Either way it was not effective. Clint comes on in 3-4 hurts Fletcher and seems to be turning the tide, but Fletcher is just relentless. The embodiment of the golden age of Philadelphia Middleweights, Fletcher is the energizer bunny! RBR 1 Fletcher 2 Fletcher 3 Even (I was gonna score Fletcher, but then Jackson came on! Was gonna go Jackson but Fletcher finished strong...went even instead) 4 Jackson 5 Fletcher 6 Fletcher 7 Jackson 8 Fletcher 9 Fletcher 10 Fletcher 11 Jackson 12 Fletcher I agreed w/the widest judge 8-3-1 but 7-4-1 or 7-5 are fair as well.
I think we only had 2 different. I had 3 even...and I think we had 8? Different? Not sure now, I check a couple of hours ago.
If you remember I had Pea winning but said it was the first time seeing the fight where I didn't feel it was a robbery at all.
Frank Fletcher vs Ernie Singletary Man I needed this! After suffering through a Whitaker fight, back to back Fletcher fights and I feel like a man again! The first 4 rounds are so competitive you can score them all even or opposite from me w/no complaint from me. 5-7 Fletcher asserts his will and begins taking control slowly grinding Singletary down. this fight is so much closer than my card, and might be among the best MW fights I have ever seen. Fletcher does some great work with his back to the ropes, and even though Singletary is leaning on him and pushing him there it is Fletcher throwing more, landing more and bringing more power. Great effort from both guys in a nonstop 7 rd war...ref waves it off prior to 8 as Singletary’s eye is cut and closed! 1 Even 2 Singletary 3-7 Fletcher Fletcher 69-65 at TOS
Kazuto Ioka vs Jeyvier Cintron Round 1: 10-9 Cintron Round 2: 10-9 Cintron Round 3: 10-9 Cintron (close) Round 4: 10-9 Ioka Round 5: 10-9 Ioka (close) great round, both men very crisp and accurate) Round 6: 10-9 Ioka Round 7: 10-9 Ioka (savage bodywork from the champion) Round 8: 10-9 Cintron Round 9: 10-9 Ioka Round 10: 10-9 Ioka (Cintron's body must be screaming) Round 11: 10-9 Ioka (close) SWING Round 12: 10-9 Cintron My Score: (115-113 Ioka) 116-112 Ioka is a bit wide, but not bad. 114-114 draw would be fine as well.
Thanks for putting this one back on my list! Just got done and have it wider than you but not reflective of how many close right rounds there were. I can see 118-109 as legit as well as I gave Barrera 3 rounds that were close or borderline even and 6 for Marquez. There were 2 clear rounds both for JMM in my opinion 7 & 10. 3 rounds I had marked as border line even so I could see someone like Ledderman having it for Barrera....I just feel like Marquez edged it back then and now, even though my card might not reflect a close fight it very much was...ultra difficult rounds to score!!! Marco Antonio Barrera vs. Juan Manuel Marquez This is the night I became a Marquez fan! I used to consider him very good but thought of him as a poor mans MAB. I was hoping and expecting a Barrera win. Not sure how I actually scored it but felt like JMM took it both then and today! A shame that they did not fight 3-4 times like I wished. This is not a slugfest, but rather a very competitive strategic hard hitting chess match which is more enjoyable in my opinion. These guys styles compliment each other with both taking the lead effectively band countering and getting countered effectively. I do think JMM was more aggressive and landed the bigger punches and Barrera won the jab department...great fight to revisit! round 7 was poorly officiated w/Barrera scoring a KD that was ruled a slip and then Barrera making a poor decision by hitting a still down JMM and losing a point. If Nady has ruled correctly this could have turned a losing round from MAB to a 10-8 round in his favor...but then Barrera lost his focus hitting JMM while down turning it from 10-8 MAB to 10-8 JMM a big swing. the HBO commentary was horrible and clearly cheering on Barrera...it took them 2 rounds to admit that the point deduction was valid after calling it a travesty of justice 2 rounds earlier. I did agree that Nady can’t miss that call though very poor as I was ready to score it 10-8 or 9-8 w/the deduction which resulted in a 3 point swing for JMM. RBR 1 MAB (even is fair as well) 2 MAB (Close) 3 JMM (Close) 4 JMM (close) 5 JMM (close) 6 MAB (even is fair as well) 7 JMM 10-8 (horrible officisting) 8 JMM (even is fair as well) 9 JMM (close) 10 JMM 11 JMM (close) 12 JMM (close) JMM 117-110 on my card but it seems a disservice to reflect that this was an extremely close and closely contested fight! I would have 115-111 if 7 had been ruled properly.
Myung Woo Yuh vs Oh Kon Son Yuh - Son R1: 10 - 9 Yuh extremely adept defensively here. Great parrying. R2: 10 - 7 Two standing 8 counts. Dominant round for Yuh; insane work rate. R3: 10 - 9 Brillaint short work from Yuh. Neither man taking a breath. R4: 10 - 9 Son never stops despite getting dominated in exchanges. Brutal body work from Yuh. R5: 10 - 9 Insane work rate, but Yuh much superior skills wise. R6: 10 - 9 Son has crazy heart, but can't get through. R7: TKO Son's body gives in before his spirit. Notes: Great showing of subtle offensive skills from Yuh, primarily his parrying and crazy work rate. He did struggle more than he should have with the limited Son, perhaps, but Son's heart was tremendous here, and he took a beating while always trying to win.
Head playing tricks with me. Years ago I watched the Mike Weaver v Scott Ledoux 12 rounder and scored it widely for Weaver. In ensuing years, I somehow thought the judges scored it only closely for Weaver, which prompted me to once again tune in on this one without verifying the scores first. I rescored it today and realized I must have been thinking of another fight. Actual scores were - all for Weaver - 117-114 (that first score made me say, "Aha"!), and then 118-110 and 117-108. The last two being totally in line with my card. Which, btw, was 119-110 for Weaver. I had the first round even, the second for Ledoux and rounds 3-12 all for Weaver. I would have had it 119-109 but the solid knockdown Weaver scored in the 6th was ruled a slip by the myopic ref. Oh, well, at least I watched a fight today.
