Robinson. If you pick Charles you are getting too hipster. There's a reason some opinions are firmly established.
Charles. Much better résumé, wins over Maxim 5*, Bivins 4*, Marshall 2*, Moore 3*, Layne 3*, Louis, Walcott 2*, Burley 2*, Yarosz, Smith 2* and Lesnevich. He also went up higher in weight. Robinson had better consistentcy. But **** consistency
Robinson. Unquestionably the greatest welterweight of all time and he has a very strong case to be the greatest middleweight of all time too. Charles is the greatest light-heavyweight ever and has an argument for a top 10 spot at heavyweight. Obviously a great, great fighter but just not quite as great as Robinson in my view.
I think Charles beat more better fighters but Robinson was the better competitor if that makes any sense. Robinson always delivered. Win or lose, it was a spectacle. He could always fight. And whatever he had that night he left it all in the ring. Every last bit of it. He might comeback better next time but whatever the limit was that night he gave. If you read enough of Charles fight reports, for all his talent, and there was nothing he couldn’t do, sometimes he just got bad write ups where he was considered lacklustre. Without seeing them, some of his performances during his prime just didn’t hit the spot. And he was not a draw. His schedule was diabolical but even so
Robinson was more talented than Charles. A little more God given ability. SRR had a tougher neck as well. I would give Ezzard a slight edge in technical skills. At the end of the day Robinson was more dominant. They both faced a lot of good fighters but Sugar Ray was never truly knocked out by anyone. That alone is beyond impressive. By any way you measure it its Sugar Ray.
Yeah. I think you are correct. It takes nothing away from Ezzard to say so. Greatness sometimes is more than just Resume. I think Charles is tactically better and also with a better Resume, but greatness has to really go with Sugar. He made the greater historical impact. Rightly or wrongly that paves the way.
Their resumes are close. I don't know if you can give either guy an edge. Robinson was very consistent over a long period. That stands out IMO. Beating LaMotta 5x, Gavilan 2x, Zivic 2x, Bell 2x, Costner 2x, not to mention his many great post prime wins.
