It always bothers me when people bring up how many "champions" Floyd Mayweather Jr. defeated. It's easy to be a champion now. That's like saying you beat that many contenders from back in the day. Most of those guys weren't "the man" in their division. Some of them only held belts because Floyd dropped his and then fought them for the belt he'd dropped. The longer this farce of fractured titles goes on the more champions people will defeat. You'll have to beat four "champions" before you get a shot at someone with a real title soon.
One thing's for sure winning a title in all 8 divisions in 1920 would have been a task for a real superman or a freak of nature. I got Benny Leonard to move up the most weight classes if he were in 2020. [edit] Overall 2020 is better. Lomachenko beats the charleston and camel walk out of the 1920's folk. I think we'd come out a bit better because there are more boxers now. We're kind of in a renaissance when there are more boxers than at any time in history besides the 1930s. The Great Depression sure did wonders for our sport. But 1920 is when radio and movie theaters started to take off and boxing was becoming highly lucrative deepening the talent pool. If you took the sport's pulse in 1920 it only had as many boxers as there were in 2000. Who are you gonna' find kicking around then? Let me see. Harry Greb at Middleweight. Benny Leonard at Lightweight. Gene Tunney at Light Heavyweight. Jack Dempsey at Heavyweight. Mickey Walker was still green and two years from a Welterweight title. Jimmy Wilde was Flyweight champ. Jack Britton and Ted Kid Lewis were at Welter. Johnny Kilbane?
So because the 1920s had fewer divisions and fewer champs, that era was automatically better than today? I mean, since 1920 right now is "beating" 2020 in the poll 8-5, this must be what the majority of you guys think… since I have so far seen little else than the "less is better" argument. But is this really all it takes to convince us, that the 1920s was a superior (compared to today) decade? Isn't this a very superficial take on things? Surely there must be other things to consider - not least the fact, that there today are much more countries with pro boxing, and MUCH more international competition. Shouldn't such things be part of the overall picture?
Corrales--The Man at 130 Genaro Hernandez--The Man at 130 Castillo--The Man at 135 Hatton--The Man at 140 (Hatton wanted it at 147) Marquez--The Man at 135, fight at 147 minus. Baldomir--The Man at 147 (lineal) Mosley--The Man at 147 Pac--The Man at 147 (other than Floyd) Cotto--The Man at 154 Canelo--The Man at 154 That's a lot of men.
Among others. Then there are the Canelo ball polishers who started saying that nobody had ever been a four weight champ before after he beat Kovalev. I'll give Canelo props for beating a light heavyweight. I didn't think he could do it, and I'm not sure he did it legitimately, but that is what it is. However, he didn't beat the consensus man in three of those divisions. And guys like Tommy Hearns already won paper titles from welterweight to cruiserweight while Henry Armstrong held the unified title from featherweight to middleweight. Ray Leonard held titles from Welterweight to Light Heavyweight, and I think three at the same time somehow. Is that what Canelo's accomplishment is? Because that's more of a business thing convincing the organizations to keep listing him as a title holder at multiple weights instead of stripping him of some because he's not defending all the belts fighting twice a year like he does.
Why tf am I being tagged in this sh1t?. First off there is NOBODY ALIVE currently who was around when there was only 1title every great fighter you've seen live has fought when there was at the very least 2/3 titles in each division. Bringing up and athlete 100 years ago that no one has ever seen live and say they are better than guys now is ridiculous, At the end of the day people like you are guys who just find reasons to bash fighters you don't like ignoring the fact that while you discredit their accomplishments they still doing more than your favorite fighter...
