Layne has wins over Brion .The press voted for Brion, as did the crowd. "James Dawson, New York Times, scored the bout 7-3 for Brion, giving Layne rounds 1, 2 and 8. Associated Press scored the bout 7-3 Layne. Dawson wrote: “Plunging and tossing like a rudderless ship, Rex Layne, Lewiston, Utah, heavyweight, somehow or other managed to gain a decision over Cesar Brion, from the Argentine, in ten dull rounds of fighting at Madison Square Garden last night. And if there is any consolation in a moral victory, Brion has it. A crowd of 5,768 booed the verdict and it was plain that many, if not the majority, thought Brion had won.” Associated Press: “22-year-old Rex from Utah’s sugar beet land failed to live up to the gaudy promise of his Nov. 24 upset over tired old Jersey Joe Walcott.” Walcott. Charles. Considered a robbery "In a blatantly obvious hometown decision, Referee Jack Dempsey scored 2 rounds for Layne, 1 round for Charles with 7 rounds even. Most objective observers felt Charles had won. During the fight Layne butted Charles repeatedly without caution from the referee. Legendary cornerman and trainer Ray Arcel said,"Instead of adding dignity to the fight game, Dempsey has added disgrace." "While there still may reamin lingering doubts in the minds of some fight fans as to the superiority of Rex Layne over Ezzard Charles, the International Boxing Club made its stand clear Saturday by offering Layne a title shot at the winner of the Rocky Marciano-Jersey Joe Walcott fight. Even as the fans continued their arguments over referee Jack Dempsey's verdict Friday, which gave the underdog Layne a surprise decision over Charles, the IBC stepped forward with its blessing for Layne." -Salt Lake Tribune Unofficial scorecards Ring Magazine - 5-5 Draw Salt Lake Tribune - 6-3-1 Charles Rocky Mountain News - 5-3-2 Charles" Satterfield Thompson Doesn't look so special now does it?
If this is your way of withdrawing your claim that he quit, fine. If it's not, what does it even mean? Don't try to draw me into some awful, two-tone debate you had six pages ago.
How many fighters did Tucker face who were smaller than himself ? How many were journeyman ? The bulk of his professional record is built up with men of such description.
the ring magazine rankings had Douglas and Tucker at #7 and #9... neither guy had beat anyone currently in the rankings. Tucker was the USBA champion and Tucker was eligible to challenge for it. The IBF had a vacancy. I think whoever they chose should have had more credentials than those two.
Yes it was the prestigious International Boxing Federation - AKA - world title.. This means that the winner of that match between Tony Tucker and James Buster Douglas was to be crowned a “ world champion. “. Tucker was the IBF’s #1 while Buster might have been #2 or thereabouts... But despite these ratings or the prestige of the Great IBF, neither Buster nor Tony had ever proven themselves beyond fringe level to that point. The USBA, NABF or Intercontinental titles might have been more appropriate.. but maybe they ran fresh out of them and had a request for more on backorder
There you go then. Park your weird determination to redefine the level of these fighters in a manner nobody anywhere but you has ever decided to define fighters and refer to them as follows: Top ten ranked contender. Or, if you absolutely have to because you cannot bare to provide credit for anyone who has the misfortune to be matched with Marciano while you have working internet: Lower end top ten ranked contenders. Half the forum doesn't know what "USBA level fighters" are. EVERYONE understands the above definitions.
In which of those fights do you feel Marciano demonstrated "great" closing abilities? Did you watch those fights? Do you feel that guys like Walcott, Charles, and Moore tried to keep Marciano at bay with their longer reaches? Do you feel that they threw a lot of jabs and constantly stepped backwards to maintain the distance? And most of those guys were barely bigger than him, by heavyweight standards.
Oh common. Danny Sutton, O.T Davis, Walter Santemore and Bobby Crabtree were Hall of fame material in my book.. and Look at how well seasoned Jimmy Young was by the time Tucker got to him.
Absolutely.. and he crushed Dave Jaco while he still had more wins than losses.. Few fighters would have taken that risk
Walcott fight was pretty even. Anyone complaining about that fight is a clown. Never saw the others and neither did u.
No neither of us did ,so we have to go by the consensus of those that did.And the consensus was that Layne got gifts in both the Brion and Charles fights. Is that a fair assessment of the events?
