Pre Holmes Cooney? I'd favor him barely against Spinks

If Spinks could drop prime Cooney 2x and stop him like he did the time they actually fought, it may give us a clue to his punching power at heavy. It may mean that Spinks punching power at heavy may have been roughly equal to Holmes punching power.

Amen. Cooney was a good top contender in his day.

I would still install Spinks as a narrow favorite, but I would expect to see a fight this time!

Cooney was a shot alcoholic by the time he fought Spinks. Anyway It was clear in the 2 Holmes vs Spinks fights who was the heavier hitter and remember this was a slower 36 year old Holmes who didn’t have the same snap and speed in his punches that he had when he was younger.

He's a sexually frustrated troll, the reason he hates Cooney is because he got his ass kicked by him at Studio 54 in New York City back in 1981.

Spinks by UD or late stoppage

    He's too versatile.

In his prime, Cooney was dangerous but Mike could outbox him.

1981? Isn't it time to let a nearly 40 year old grudge go?

I wonder if Spinks could beat a prime Ali in a danceoff competition???

Your listing of Cooney's opposition just reinforces how protected he was.

They really should have developed him better, but the white hope thing made it possible to go straight for Holmes.

He did give Holmes a good fight, but not as tough as Weaver, Snipes or Witherspoon.

I just think Spink's movement and smarts would always give Gerry a problem.

Certainly prime Gerry could apply steady pressure and would be dangerous, but if Spinks throws in spurts and moves away from the left hook, he should be okay.

Gerry's best chance would be to land the left hook to the body early and slow Spink's foot movement, so he can get a stationary target.

Gerry's MUST have Spinks right in front of him to do damage.

I think Spinks is skilled and smart enough to survive early, then take over .more and more as the fight progresses into the late rounds

    Then he'll clean up.

The fight will last longer and be more competitive than their actual fight, but the winner remains the same.
