How did Holmes do against 5”10 power punchers who knew how to close the gap and trap? Even Holmes admitted Marciano would be one of the toughest bouts as well as Ali. That should tell you Why do you care for the mans opinion? You’re not gonna listen anyway lol. There is literally nothing he could say to sway your opinion. You don’t want to hear Marciano has more power and is two fisted in that regard. You don’t want to hear he has the better chin. The better stamina. The crowding constant pressure style that would drive larry crazy. You don’t want to hear that Marciano would catch him coming over the top of Larry’s jab thag he would have to drop to hit the much lower opponent (would mean he would have to leave himself open like against Tyson). Like Goldman said if you’re short make yourself shorter and it’s affective. You don’t want to hear any of it which is fine. It’s your opinion.. let the man have his
He didn't do too well against the only guy who fits that description...of course, he hadn't fought in nearly two years and had just become a grandfather. No disrespect intended.
Besides we are comparing. Holmes and Marciano two all time greats This isnt chisora im talking about here
Fair points. Certainly wasn’t a prime Larry. I think when talking about all the top guys it would close fights and that is one of em thag could go either way.
I give Marciano a better chance against prime Holmes than Tyson but think Tyson wipes the floor with Marciano.
Which 5'10" power punchers are you referring to , Tyson? How old was Holmes and what preparation did he have for that fight. Holmes was 39 years old and hadn't fought for 2 years. Want to speculate how a 39years old, out of the ring for 2 years Marciano would do against Larry? lol I care for anyone's opinion. If I didn't I wouldn't ask for it .If they make a statement and I dont happen to agree with it I ask them politely to justify it by giving their reasons.Ive always understood that's what a forum is for,but perhaps I have been labouring under a misapprehension? Meanwhile I'll take your points and gladly rebutt them . 1.Marciano has more power ?Yes I'd say he has. 2. A better chin ? No I'd say he hasn't, Holmes got up from a Shavers right hand that would ko nearly every heavyweight .If he could survive that he could survive Marciano's power. 3.Marciano's stamina was matched against old men, and small old men at that. 4.He never went 15rds with a prime modern sized heavyweight . 5.Holmes has the jab to hit Marciano before he even gets in range. 6.He has the reach to tag him while he is trying to get into that range. 7.He has a lazer right hand to catch him when he comes up out of that crouch to land his shots. 8.He has the uppercut to catch Marciano in his crouch. 9.He has more handspeed than Marciano 10.He has better footspeed than Marciano 11.He has better all round skills than Marciano. You want to know what Larry said about Rocky? "He was a young man fighting old guys,Im an old guy fighting young ones". Direct quote.
Who the **** do you think you are? Picking ANYBODY at all over Marciano is inexplicable behavior. You sir are a disgrace to humanity.
Marciano only went 15 once with p4p ATG Charles who really wasn’t far from prime. He knocked everyone out that’s why lol. Please name me fights where Holmes uppercut was so significant? Serious question. Since you and others jam this point home I’ve been looking for it and don’t see it. I’ve watched Holmes Norton and Holyfield recently too and just don’t see him utilizing it much in those bouts (give me a fight to watch). FYI you can see Rocky utilize a solid uppercut in most his fights. He also crowds better then Holyfield and Norton. Holmes endurance is no where near Marcianos...not really debatable it’s extremely obvious. No one has been able to hold Marciano out of range and he faced some great boxers with much better reaches then he. Not saying it’s impossible but if shop worm Norton could close the gap w some success I don’t see why a prime Marciano would have much problem.
Gazelle, I always read (and often agree with) your posts, but you do remember the uppercut that ruined Weaver? No disrespect intended.
If I don’t know something I openly admit it. I will watch the fight but in watching Norton and Holyfield he almost never uses it against two guys whom were pressuring him the whole fight.
Charles is a p4p atg but not a great heavyweight.Holmes ko'd Weaver with an uppercut FYI Holmes had a torn left bicep muscle in the Norton fight Marciano faced some great boxers who were past their best Charles had nearly a 100 fights on his clock met him mid ring and went the distance. Norton was shopwornwith44 fight but Charles with 96 wasnt far from prime ? GTF LOL Marciano never faced a prime modern heavyweight who had the speed ,reach and jab of Holmes.
He used it quite a bit against Shavers (especially in the second fight). Shavers I think was only 6'. He landed some nice uppercuts against Mercer as well. He tried to employ it extensively against Tyson, but his ring rust and older reflexes betrayed him. The uppercut, plus his expert holding, would have made that fight at least a little longer. But he was well into decline by then anyway, had been on it for four years (easy).
