There is a scene in the movie, before Jake is about to fight Cerdan, where it shows Jake, Joey, and Vicki in a hotel room where a guy, (presumably the cut man) is sewing a piece of meat. Joey says something like "how long did it take? Answer: 45 seconds. No, you gotta stitch him up faster than that". What were they planning to do, sew Jake up in between rounds in case he got cut? I take it this scene was another example to show how nutty the LaMottas' were?
And during rounds, they used to produce some really fetching doilies and shawls and the like to pass the time. Ace Marotta had stunning cross-weave ability.
