Yeah I think it may have been. I've thought about it before, especially when casting about for 'legal' streams... Actually I also came to the conclusion that I enjoyed just relaxing and listening to the fight more than I did messing about with popups, frozen video etc. etc. from said 'legal' streams... I'm definitely a Mike Costello fan. Knows his stuff, doesn't let ego get in the way or try too hard. He has a good delivery, can build an atmosphere and for the big fights he's usually alongside Andy Lee who is a good summariser.
Agree about Costello, i'm also a big fan of McIntosh, not everybody's cup of tea but he seems to remain unbiased and call the action as he see's and I also enjoy his ridiculous metaphors. Andy Lee was good to start but I was disappointed with some of his recent Sky work, he appears to have succumbed the Sky media training. I was always a big fan of Paulie too, he doesn't seem to care what anybody thinks and just goes from the heart and can also explain the technical side of boxing very well. I think he was working for Fox/PBC when he was ranting that Fury was robbed in the first fight.
Yeah Mcintosh is good, as much for his massive looming frame dwarfing all the boxers and there's the added attraction of Dempsey who may go fully random Partridge at any given moment. Paulie is great, really knows his stuff and less likely to parrot a corporate line. Take your point about Andy, but on R5 he's usually unbiased.
LOL! Picked out this Partridge moment yesterday from Dempsey during the Wilder v Fury 1 press conference. Timestamped. This content is protected
I'd not realised he'd done the presser! Hair not at full Dempsey though. They could be saving that for fight night.
It'd still be nice to see strong undercards. Look at UFC for example. They absolutely stack cards. Granted they pay poorly but there's an inbetween where big boxing cards could have at least two really big fights.
Love it Better than watching imo You get a real feel for the atmosphere How alot of fights used to get covered before tv even existed
Aye I agree, that would be ideal. I often don't want to hear the commentary but you don't want no sound at all either. Sometimes I just turn the telly down quite low so I'm still getting some noise but can't make out everything the commentator says. Adam Smith is comes to mind.
I remember BBC broadcasting Mike McCallum v Herol Graham like that due to a media strike of some kind. If my memory serves me right, I think Terry Lawless may have given his insight in-between rounds. It worked really well
Back in the day I used to frequent a bookies which was a tiny hut outside of a workingman's club. The only televised broadcast was on Saturday's or during festivals and on a tiny telly perched on a shelf. Otherwise it was SIS audio commentary only. Your nag might have been tailed off, but in your own mind there was always a possibility and if the commentator mentioned him and raised his voice and he was finishing....."he's getting up!".....well that feeling was the best I ever had.
Technolgy as killed peoples imaginations Visuals for the eye and no longer for the mind Its a fickle world in which we live today
Agreed. Quite apt for mucky photos and videos on the net too. These young lads now have never had to forage for torn pieces of jazz mags in bushes etc. they just go on google now.
