Kovalev would have been extremely dangerous to Roy. But I warned everybody before the Ward fights, that we didn't know how and if he could overcome adversity. We had guys on here talking about him as though he was the Terminator. We had members saying that a prime version of Roy would be steam rollered in under 3 rounds etc. And I told everybody that we didn't know what would happen if an opponent wasn't intimidated by him, and that we didn't know what would happen if he was hit hard flush and often. I posed the question of whether or not he'd mentally fold, or whether or not he'd welcome the challenge. But Andre gave us all of the answers that I was looking for. He could not intimidate Andre Ward outside of the ring, and he couldn't handle Ward inside the ring. So if Roy would have tagged him with clean, fast shots from unorthadox angles, I know how it would have played out. Of course, Kovalev would always have had a punchers chance, but he was always easy enough to hit, as evidenced in his fights with Ward and Pascal, and Roy's speed and accuracy would have found him without issue. So whilst it would have been a dangerous fight for Roy, it would also have been a very tough stylistic match up from Kovalev's perspective too.
If Jones could be knocked down by Lou Del Valle in his “prime” Kovalev would be able to land on Roy and we all know what happens. Shattered Glass with Roy knocked out like he was on 3 separate continents in his career. Roy had no Chin. None.
At light heavy I mostly remember poor opposition, he was what they said he was though, once in a life time kind of fighter, its just hes not dominating bigger highly skilled men, men with better skills, just not as athletic as him. You watch Kov when he ripped the title from Cleverley and around that period, when he was hungry and not being stubborn and up himself, cutting corners etc, Jnr has a torrid time with him imo. Even Tarver, he was a bigger man with excellent skills, Roy possibly always loses to him...
Sshhh... you're not supposed to mention that Roy was clearly juiced to high heaven all throughout his prime and wasn't being tested at all for the first 11 years of his career and would stand about as much chance of beating VADA as he would've of being able to remain vertical and conscious after shipping a full-blooded Kovalev right hand, like the one that landed with an almighty thud that sent the iron-jawed Pascal through the ropes. Hell, Kovalev even floored Pascal with a jab. In fact, he dropped numerous fighters with power jabs or knocked them out with one. He even broke ribs with one and I can assure you that ribs are made out of a far more sturdy substance than Roy's chin is. This content is protected
You've been trotting out this garbage for years. Just because Del Valle landed on Roy and knocked him down, it doesn't mean that Kovalev would have done. There's no guarantee. Otherwise all of the fighters who were better than Del Valle would have too. Yet they didn't. So why was that? Also, as I've told you numerous times, Roy's foot slipped on the wet canvas, which caused him to slip face first onto his out stretched hands. And you can't refute that, because there's video footage with 3 different camera angles showing it. Bore off.
At LHW, Roy fought most of the top 10 fighters there. The only real omission was obviously the Dariusz fight. But Roy didn't want to fight in Germany, and Dariusz wouldn't fight in the U.S. Roy still fought good opposition there: Montell Griffin Virgil Hill Reggie Johnson Richard Hall Clinton Woods Eric Harding Antonio Tarver Yes, Kovalev would have been an extremely dangerous fight for Roy. But Roy would have had a huge advantage in speed, and Kovalev was easy to hit. Go and watch Pascal land numerous telegraphed, overhand right hands. Ward also broke him down mentally and physically and exposed him as a bully. Roy would also have been a nightmare opponent for Kovalev. Tarver would always have caused Roy problems, but Roy legitimately beat him when he was drained after having had 50 fights and when in his mid 30's. So prime for prime, the smart money would have been on Roy. Because a prime version of Roy was clearly better than the versions who Tarver fought.
Virgil hill was all wrong for Roy on paper as well and was troubling him with his height and jab until roy threw a right hand under his jab and broke his ribs. Kovalev isn't taking that Jones bodyshot. I would say kovalev and Jones both had better chin in their primes than now but kovalev was more hittable than Roy.
Kovalev up to and through the first Ward fight would of been an extremely tough match for Roy. After that “loss” the fire went out in Kovalev and his decline has been rapid. Ward was durable and stayed in the pocket during the second half of the first fight something Roy would not have done. Which made the fight somewhat close although I clearly thought Kovalev won. If Roy gets clipped it’s over and we saw what a rangy light heavy in tarver did to Jones.
