Not really championship quality but he was a good contender. I wish I could say he was better than that, but he wasn't. He was a good test for those who were going for the title.
Loved watching Oba’s career unfold as the unofficial USA Network house fighter. Gatekeeper, almost good enough to become an upper tier guy but not quite.
I was an amateur fighter back when he was and he was a known badass around the midwest. He had a rep for straight up destroying dudes and the fact that he came out of Detroit and was know for smashing dudes at Kronk only added to his legend since that was during Kronks heyday. His pro career didn't pan out the way it looked like it would when he was an am but he was a really good fighter.
I was very high on him, thought he would be future face of Kronk. I even got to see him live when Andries came home to defend his world title. Livingstone Bramble, five years past his pomp, burst the bubble, and sticking him in with Trinidad was cruel, I hope he got paid well for it!
Very similar level to Anthony “Baby” Jones, although Baby was a little less protected IIRC. In fact, I think Baby and Oba fought to a draw.
He lost to Trinidad, Quartey, and Oscar. I like his chances at becoming champion a lot better without those 3 fighters in his way. Interested in your explanation for him being overrated as the best contender to not win a title.
Watched him come up on local cable stations. Fun prospect to watch and a good addition to the Kronk stable back then.
His best win is Derrel Coley. That’s not good enough for “best contender ever” and guys like Six Heads Lewis won titles during Oba’s time.
Six heads didn’t fight the same trio that Oba Carr faced. In fact he won a vacant title against a serial bank robber, James Page.
You don't get it. Oba might have gotten a shot at Six Heads or a rusty Page if he logged a win other than Derrel Coley.
