He was a boxer puncher dingbat, not a slugger. Look at Sanchezs record and Ko %. And Salvador was definately not a puncher. Kudos for Mintor fight though. What others you go to. THATS stuff I like to here. Colin Jones? Sibson? Finnegan-Mintor, etc.
I THOUGHT YOU DIDNT LIKE EXCUSES? WHY ARE YOU MAKING THEM FOR HAGLER? THUMBING? BULL****. LIKE MARVIN DID TO SLOW DOWN ROLDANS MOMENTUM WHEN JUAN WAS KICKING HIS ASS? CMON. PART OF THE GAME. HAGLER WOULD NEVER FIGHT GREB OR ZIVIC I GUESS. GIVE ROBERTO CREDIT DONT MAKE EXCUSES FOR MARVIN. EARLIER IN 83 AGAINST SIBBO AND SCYPION HAGLER LOOKED ABSOLUTE PRIME. PEOPLE WERE PREDICTING A SLAUGHTER. TO THIS DAY HAGLER CALLS THIS HIS BEST AND FAVORITE FIGHT. YOU ARE JUST BEING HYPOCRITICAL MAKING EXCUSES FOR MARVIN. NO EXCUSES!!!!!!!!!!
Well we can't listen to anything a jaded person like Monzon has to say about it; he's juuuuuust a bit biased and didn't like the comparisons of greatness people were making at the time. Good point about Hagler easing up after testing the waters for just the 6th round, that was a bit odd. Still, he won clearly, and beating that version of Duran still meant something. And he did it in a technical way, which is what I think he needed to do, it would have been taking too big a chance to just wade in the way he did against Minter.
Honestly I do not know what fight you watched. Duran came close to defeating Hagler. I had Hagler up by one point. Duran got tired in that last round and Hagler outhustled him
Well the judges scorecards say otherwise. Who says he went 80%? Hagler had to pace himself in the early rounds, he can't go that pace for 15 rounds. A good strategy because Marvin finished strong. Duran makes you miss and that takes a lot of energy out of you also.
Sure, the scorecard was close. I don't think the fight was close. I had Duran winning maybe 6 rounds. Those rounds were close too. Hagler won his rounds easily. Duran had nothing for Hagler. He couldn't hurt him, he couldn't outwork him.
Well in fairness, one of the judges (the Japanese one) had six rounds even in that fight. Can't trust a boxing judge.
I am explaining the situation as I see it. Marvin fought very docile and he seemed almost affected by Duran's reputation more than he should have been but that makes fights. When he poured it on at the end that was when he knew what he had to do. i never said he was not in shape or didn't have it he was docile compared to many other fights and afraid of something whether that is a thumb or the right hand, but he still won. He was affected more than Hearns was months later. Regardless, Marvin fought a cautious fight and he pulled it out. He won the fight.
Marvin fought an intelligent fight.Had he gone full speed since the early going he might have run out of gas.Duran made him miss a lot
I never referred to him as a slugger in any post. I don't need to look as Sanchez' record to get an evaluation of what Hagler brought to the table .I watched him come up through the ranks ,and he did it the hard way. I was ringside for several Jones fights including his two kos of Laing, several of Sibson's.Finnegan's and some of Minter's.I don't insult you , so don't insult me. My vocabulary would leave you scratching in the dust for a come back and you would then get banned.Which would be no good to either of us.You have a lot to offer this forum,so cut out the crap and deliver it!
Tell us about those nights and fights. TH A T firsthand experience is what people need to hear. And nobody leaves me scratching in the dust verbally. I wrote for a livin g. Get real.Tell your accounts of going to these terrific fights and maybe others will also. Then maybe this forum would be more interesting and less combative.
I've been on the lash[drink, ] went to a Gauguin exhibition in London and then on the beer/wine for several hours ,time for my bed ,catch you later M..
