He beat Yori Boy Campas, by KO too. That win is a lot better than Coley.

No way. It was at 154 first of all, and Campas was done.

Xplosive, thanks for putting me on to this fight. I just added my score onto the scorecard thread. What a tremendous fight! Thanks, dude.

Good fighter - good enough to give better fighters like Trinidad a good fight but not good enough to take a title. And my view of fighters from the 90s on who failed to win a world title is that if they couldn't win a title then, they'd never have won one in any era.

Solid fighter. Losses came against those who went on to become best in their era aka Trinidad, Quartey, DLH.

About 3 years in the game is when he stepped up comp. Many say he lost to Bramble, but he showed his potential- overcame to KD in 1st round-almost dropped Bramble in the 5th of a warring round...Bramble had never been down.

Not looking at his record, but the best o video shows how he could put 'em together. Nice jab, pretty damn good left hook. No Ike or DLH? I think he would have gotten a strap. Especially in today's era of a dozen belts per division. He went 0-3 for IBF, WBC & WBA. Again these were real deal boxers he lost to. By the time he got beat by less than top comp he was around Y2K right after stopping Campas, which he was past his prime about 12 years in I think he was done. 13 year 54-6-1 damn good record.

Was a pleasure watching him fight. Had he gone for a WBO? I think so. He didn't want any of those NABF type titles.

I enjoyed his fights against Quartey--this dude threw almost 900 punches...hard to beat such a high work rate, accuracy & high guard. Against Tito, man that dude was just beginning his reign of terror- He stopped Carr, but Carr was still on his feet. A testament to how tough he was.

Campas was not done. He beat Tony Ayala a few months later and fought until 2019.

    Solid top 10 Welterweight.

Gave De La Hoya and Quartey good fights.

As a young prospect he was matched, by USA Tuesday Night Fights fan poll, with the fading but still tough Livingstone Bramble. That turned out to be an exciting war and a good learning experience for Carr.

But, after that scare, he fought pretty weak competition before getting a shot at Felix Trinidad and he was punished.

He should have faced at least one legitimate 147 lb contender before that.

HIs developed may have been stunted by too much weak oppososition on his way up.

I think if anything hurt him it was how many fights he had as an amateur/in the gym. I know he was a national champion multiple times by the time he was 18 and I remember hearing stories of him more than holding his own against much bigger guys in sparring at Kronk like Leenozer Barber. He was pretty seasoned guy by the time he turned pro, he just couldn't get it done against the top guys of his era which I think most would agree was a very strong group at 147.

Don't insult me by suggesting that Ayala in the 2000s was anything more than a hype job. Campas was brought it because he was washed up. Ayala would never beat a serious fighter in his comeback. Campas' last good win was Raul Marquez in 97. I watched the Carr--Campas fight. You didn't. Campas looked totally shot.

Looking shot and being shot are two different things. Campas was brought in to face Ayala for the name. I’m glad it backfired on everyone. Either way, a shot fighter, which Campas was not, wouldn’t have been able to make Ayala quit.

I think Oba Carr is one of the best fighters to not have won a title. Unfortunately, he came along when Ike, Tito, and Oscar ruled the division. He might’ve had a better chance to win a title during the Lewis, Mayorga, Spinks, Judah, Baldomir were on the scene.

You have your opinion and I have mine. Either way, we’ll have to agree to disagree.

Well, you shouldn't talk about Campas--Carr bc you didn't watch it. Campas was awful on that night.

Ayala cited a broken hand as the reason he quit against Campas. The fight was close but Yori Boy was gaining momentum.

I think he'd have a good fight with Baldomir. Carr would win rounds but Baldomir would have a chance to break him down. Judah and Cory were better than him. Six Heads was good for like two fights it's hard to say. Mayorga would beat the crap out him.

What makes you think I didn’t watch Carr-Campas?

I know about Ayala’s broken hand. However, it was shocking to see him quit when he did. Even more shocking was that the masochistic Tony Sr. allowed Jr. to throw in the towel. Paulie seemed like a good dude. I can’t believe he’s Jr.’s baby brother.

Whether Carr could beat those guys (Baldomir, Judah, Spinks, Six Heads, Mayorga) is irrelevant. My point is that any oddsmaker would have given him better odds against EVERY one them than they would for the trio of Bazooka, Tito, and Fishnets.

Carr was a solid fighter. His fight against Bramble showed his vulnerability. Should I do like you and assume you didn’t watch it? It also showed his heart, as did his failed title challenges.

Mayweather would have ducked Carr till Oba was about 40 then squeaked out a 7-5 decision

Like Oba did with Livingstone Bramble?
