Just watched highlights of Papke v Ketchel and I was very dissappointed in how clumsy Ketchel looked, he was pulling back while punching and his guard ws all over the place, why was he rated so highly?

Because he was one of the best, people had seen up until then.

It's worth reading the news reports of this fight compared with others of his for more context. This was considered a poor performance from him at the time.

    His record is very impressive.

He cleaned house, in what was seen as a very deep middleweight era.

Granted he is not aesthetically pleasing on film, but handsome is as handsome does!

Papke was in the greatest middleweights discussion up to World War II.

I'll have to take your word for it because to my eyes the man in that video was awful. No athleticism, co-ordination, balance, technique, footwork. Obviously I cant gauge his strength from a video but everything else was utterly abysmal. Even skipping a rope was beyond him.

And how on Earth did Carpentier ever get a shot at the HW title? The man was terrified in the ring - he literally ran. Not metaphorically ran. He ran away.

Slight tangent. I can't rate Dempsey that highly because his title reign was so bad. That he deemed Carpentier worthy of a shot might have been good business sense but that is my case in point.

Just watched this and was as unsurprised by the lack of any technique whatsoever on either combatant's part (Papke throws a jab in the first few seconds and lifts his back leg! It is just horrible.) as I was surprised by Papke's decision to wear a thong. Although looking at images of him on Google it seems he often wore his budgie smugglers into combat. Even Camacho would have thought twice!

I'm well aware of this! I just find it hard to believe, that if we had footage of him in a good performance, a COMPLETELY different fighter would be revealed.

Why do people always post old timers like Papke and Ketchel, and get angry? He was never technical in even the most basic sense. That is literally common boxing knowledge.

Why not post fighters like Driscoll, McFarland, Welsh, Wilde etc who actually look impressive on film, and discuss the naunce and differences of their styles and comparison to modern rulesets?

Guess that wouldn't cause enough vitirol, and you'd have to actually appreciate classic fighter abilities.

I was just shocked because he`s so highly rated, but it`s not only old timers that are overrated a lot of modern bangers get overrated too, it`s irritating, but according to you me putting a little post up is worth reporting and getting me banned from something I enjoy xx

I didn't report you. Besides, you're a nuisance anyway, so I'm not surprised people are tired of you.

And I wasn't just talking to you with this post, but the whole, typical brigade coming in here snidely denigrating older fighters, and not just saying what they think straight up. They never talk about the guys I mentioned, just the same targets and boring talking points.
