Satterfield really swung from the floor and invested everything is his punches, didn't he. He actually had Charles in a substantial bit of trouble. There were a few question marks on Charles durability pre-war but he became quite durable truth be told. He stood up to plenty of big shots even across his prime and close to prime heavyweight stint. What a one punch KO from Charles. That was the sweetest left hook.
But not a victim of Marciano as neither was Henry,Satterfield,Valdes,Walls,Harrison,Jackson. Now you're giving Marciano credit for guys he didn't fight?lol
it’s worth noting who his victims beat. Sensibly, I am not giving credit of legendary status to Big Cat Williams.
True and remember Archie Moore although still light heavyweight Champion defeated Baker by KO beat Nino V 2X had stopped Bob Satterfield and stopped Harold Johnson who also beat Nino V - It's important to note how worthy Archie was of a title shot in fact some felt his last elimination fight was not needed.
Archie Moore was the outstanding heavyweight challenger of the Marciano era. Had Rocky not fought Moore, Archie could have justifiably claimed uncrowned HW champion status. moore proved Nino and Baker would have been far less a threat to the title than Archie was by beating them. He was the real threat to the title...and favourite over Floyd when they met.
Archie is the most underrated HW on this thread and probably amongst boxing enthusiasts/historians. When you look at his resume it’s really impressive. What’s even more impressive is he did it all after 30 lol
I don't know about that. Moore certainly earned his title shot, but he did so with a very close, bruising decision over Nino Valdes which most observers had closer than referee Braddock's 8-5-2 scorecard. Let's not forget that Valdes - according to you - "stank".
I don’t know what valdes smelt like but he looked pretty good knocking out Jackson! He should of got his shot at Rocky then but they went for the Charles rematch who nino had already beat!
You cannot deny that the body of work Archie had at heavyweight made him the biggest threat to the title of that period. During the reign of Marciano Moore beat #3 rated Clarence Henry, #10 ratedJimmy Slade, #2 rated Bob Baker and #1 rated Nino Valdes and Archie had already previously beaten Joey Maxim, Jimmy Bivins, Rusty Payne, Phil muscato and Bob Satterfeild who were all rated in the heavyweight top ten! If anyone was a better heavyweight challenger to Marciano it was probably Ezzard Charles. But when Harold Johnson beat both Ezzard Charles and Nino Valdes at heavyweight, his next loss was a knockout defeat by Archie Moore within the period that Rocky was champion. Archie was statistically one of the strongest challengers at heavyweight.
Nino always looked like a blundering Oaf to me. A Strong mauling plodder. I agree that the Marciano-Charles rematch took what should have been Ninos shot at the title because the Jackson win was justifiably enough to press for a shot at the champion but I get why he didn’t get it. The Parker fight Nino had stank. Folks left the arena rounds before it ended. the American fights he had didn’t draw much interest. He wouldn’t rematch Charles. He over powered some fringe guys in Europe but otherwise he kept losing. Harold Johnson, Archie Moore, Bob Baker all beat him. I mean after Rocky beat Moore he held on for the result of the Bob Baker vs Valdes fight, a rematch, to see if it could result in producing a logical challenger for his 50th fight but once again Nino was involved in a mauling full distance cuddling contest. It stank as much as the Parker fight. The Ring called it a dud. And so Rocky retired with no interest in a fight with Bob Baker who got the nod over Nino in a fight nobody cared about. All he had going for him was Jackson and Charles wins.
Nor has anyone on this forum suggested he should. Just what Cleveland Williams is doing in a thread about Marciano has yet to be satisfactorily explained.
Archie Moore was the number 1 contender at the end of 1955 when he got his shot ,which he was entitled to. Nino Valdes was the number 1 contender as the end of 1953, and 1954. So wasn't he entitled to a shot too? And why didn't he get one?
