Ali let alot of guys go the distance or at least later than they shouldve. Wepner only got stopped because he pissed Ali off with those rabbit punches
Becoming? Seriously, Dempsey may have been a transcendent force in the fighting arts whose excellence spanned generations but he never proved that among his motley collection of opponents.
Speed and power? Was he faster than Ali, Patterson, Frazier? Because he looked fast against a 37 year old galoot who wasn't even a full time boxer and had retire twice the previous 3 years? Because he was quicker than a foreign set-up, fabrication from Rickard & Co.? He was powerful because a lightheavy lasted the distance with him and Jack had to resort to low blows to even get his way? Because he KO'd another heavyweight non-entitiy, this one from France, and all the rubes went..."Ohhhhhh?" Dempsey was a half-step from Pro Wrestling... but at least Gorgeous George admitted everything was a set up.
Respectable points, but none of the above mentioned points are the makings of the GOAT I'm not saying that Frazier or Wladmir is the GOAT or in the discussion for myself, but they have more right to be in the discussion then Tunney ever will. For me Gene cannot even be a candidate.
Today at this moment I'm saying Louis is the greatest followed by Ali. But the best, in my opinion, which means on any given night this man would be favored or at least even money, is 'Iron' Mike Ditka.
I voted for Ali with Joe Louis a close second. As far as who I enjoy watching most, it's either Foreman or Holyfield.
