It's one thing to motivate a fighter who listens to your instructions, it's whole other story if a fighter is not listening to you. Read what Robles is saying, Ruiz wasn't listening to him or to his dad or anyone. Was he supposed to handcuff a grown man to a treadmill?

If YOU don't want to work, nobody can make you do anything.

Fat Ruiz didn't show up for training, you can call him, and he is gonna tell you, no I don't want to go, I'll come tomorrow...there is nothing you can do after that. You can threaten to quit as his trainer, and what's next? He gonna go and train with someone else.

That's why you set up camp where the team lives and trains on-site, like top fighters have done for hundreds of years.

It's not like they couldn't rent a facility for six or eight weeks. His purse was upwards of $10 million.

The fact that he called and waited for Ruiz to come to the Robles' gym. And when he didn't, the attitude was "oh well" ... shows the trainer was in over his head and just stuck around to collect his check ... because he wasn't preparing the fighter, that's for sure.

The list of champions who hated training and had to be coerced or forced at times to do it far outweighs (no pun intended) the list of those who loved it.

Maybe you make a discrete call to Al Haymon and tip him off whilst there's still time to save the day?

He can tell Andy the facts of life and maybe get through to him just how much is on the line. May work, may not, but Haymon would at least trust the trainer to keep him in the loop instead of getting a very nasty surprise when the belts are back out of his hands?

Good post. Probably about right. Harmon may have been as caught off guard by Ruiz condition as everyone else.

For his next fight, they need to kidnap Ruiz and sequester him in the Artic. Try to force him to train and keep him away from an outside distractions. Though those Inuit girls in tight parkas and high heeled snow shoes can be kind of hot.

Polar bears are already on the endangered species list though, think of how many Andy may get through if there's no snickers available? :(

Correction: he's going to pay someone else to go and not train with them.

You keep on bringing up champs that had to be coerced into training. I’m falling to recall one. Can you list examples of champs who had to somehow be coerced or forced . Especially the force.

yes there where guys that hated the intense training but they did it cause they had the work ethic and mental aptitude of a champion. I can’t think of anyone who was champ and remained champ that had to be forced into training.

I’m not saying he should or shouldn’t change trainer. No matter who trains him , it is up to him to want and have the desire to train to be a champ.

Took the words right outta my mouth.
What boxer active or retired has ever been forced into training because they "hated" it.
Most fighters hate it but have the winning mentality of a champion and keep going.

In the words of Mike Tyson:
"I wish that you guys had children so I could kick them in the f*cking head or stomp on their testicles so you could feel my pain because that's the pain I have waking up every day."

Granted, it's a bit of a crazy quote and he was talking to reporters but still, it seemed like he wasn't someone who particularly liked training but he never skipped training or never stopped listening to his trainer to the extent of Ruiz...

They have to force him to make changes otherwise he's going nowhere. What he displayed in the rematch with Joshua was appalling to say the least.

Rumors! Just rumors out of Norwalk ca is Ruiz threw the fight! He didn’t train because he knew he was going to lose! Someone ordered Ruiz to throw the fight but they don’t know who exactly! Ruiz has a new circle that does not include Robles or Ruiz sr.

People are looking to justify Ruiz complete implosion. In general, I believe in Occam's Razor. The simple explanation here is Ruiz partied to much, did not train and did not handle becoming champ very well.

He has to walk around with that the rest of his life. If he wants to redeem himself he can. Just get his butt in the gym and get disciplined. Jury's out as to if he can do it. Ultimately it's up to him.

Ruiz should have parted with the All You Can Eat Buffets but he couldn't resist the urge!! He also should have parted with trips afterwards to the Krispy Kreme Donuts Buffet!!!

I bet Teddy Atlas would follow him around and scream at Ruiz as he stuffs his face but I doubt it would help, Ruiz would just smirk at Atlas and continue stuffing his face!
