Mayweather wasn't a big welterweight and was a tiny light middleweight on the rare occasions he fought at or near that weight. A prime Golovkin calling out Mayweather in his late 30s for a fight at 154 was never really derided at the time for the BS it was. In terms of skill, Mayweather was a couple of levels above Golovkin but this is like putting Kell Brook in with Eubank Jr. or some other nonsense. At 155, Golovkin would be drained so Mayweather wouldn't get credit for the win anyway. I think many boxing fans won't rest until Mayweather in his 40s is in the ring with Andre Ward or someone like that, so they can finally have something to celebrate. Golovkin should be the one looking for challenges at this stage in his career, he doesn't have many career defining fights. If there's a paucity of those fights at middleweight for whatever reason, tough, move up. Why won't he try to establish himself at super middleweight and light heavyweight? Joe Calzaghe was, and still is, criticised for his relatively easy run as super middleweight champion but even he moved up in the end for the money when he had to.
Here is the problem with the robberies in huge legacy making fights, the credit for the victory goes a long way. Golovkin's greatest win should be against Canelo wonse and arguably twice and Canelo's greatest Victory is by far against Golovkin. Canelo keeps getting the benefit of the doubt in all his close or even not so close fights, therefore getting credit for wins he didn't necessarily deserve.Golovkin simply plowed through the middleweight division and destroyed any contender that dared get in the ring with him,and when the elite finally did fight him he beat them as well just in closer more competitive fights. If you were a top 10 fighter but not elite, you got destroyed,if you were elite going in against Golovkin you had a chance but still lost.Golovkin is right up there with Canelo ,one of the top pfp fighters in the world.Lets not get this twisted.
I agree with everything your saying but not sure what is getting twisted. brooks, Jacobs & canelo are the best names on Golovkin’s Resume. we are talking about the potential / hypothetical outcome of a Mayweather vs GGG fight @ 155lb on cinco de Mayo 2020. the only reason canelo’s name is even relevant in this thread is because he is a common opponent. Mayweather has an amazing ATG resume. Golovkin’s resume is not as strong as mayweather’s. not sure what was twisted?
Was Mike tyson's power comically overrated? The only Hall of famers he ever stopped in 56 fights were an old Larry Holmes and a blown up Light heavyweight Michael Spinks.Nobody doubts his power.Power and elite skills are obvious and Golovkin has it.
This year? This matchup would make no sense. A prime Golovkin would UD Mayweather. As for a current matchup. I dont think a current Golovkin could make 155 and if he did its impractical to try and assume what condition he would be in.
I agree with this.i wouldn't want to see Golovkin at 155 lbs ,it would be unhealthy, and it would be unfair to expect Mayweather to take on GGG at 160 lbs.If l had to choose between the two I would choose for Mayweather to weigh what he wants and for GGG to fight at 160lbs. I would like to see that fight and I would lean towards GGG by close points or KO but you can never rule out the greatness of Floyd.
Your right,it was close and competitive, but I had it for GGG. It was his 3rd toughest fight out side of Derevyanchenko, and Canelo 2 fights. Definitely one of his toughest, but I'm adamant that he won it. In my opinion.
Floyd has no interest in fighting Boxers anymore. He found the Goose that laid the golden egg in tempting top MMA fighters into Boxing matches.
